5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously 'right', 25 Dec 2009
By
This review is from: Mendelssohn/Bargiel: Octets (Audio CD)
This is a superb bargain. Not only do you get a fabulous account of the great Mendelssohn Octet (perfectly judged tempi, beautifully phrased singing tone) but an extra treat in the shape of the Bargiel Octet (a new one on me). It is melodic and interesting - though no masterpiece - and serves as an appetiser to the main course on this CD. All recorded in crystal clear sound. And look at the price!

4.0 out of 5 stars mendelssohns master piece, 21 Feb 2001
By "marianne3000" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Mendelssohn/Bargiel: Octets (Audio CD)
i, as a musician understand the mood of mendelssohns octet. the octet i have just been working in has performed the IV movment of the piece recently, although it was not up to the tempo of how the wounder musicians that performed it, it was at a resonable standered and as i am only a 14 year old cello player this piece is extremly difficult. also at the momement our octet is working at playing bargiels octet as well, this is why i purchised this edition of the CD. as a group we analyse it down to every last detail, e.g the chord progresions. the mood has been captured well in this piece, for music lovers out there that enjoyed this CD i recomend listening to another octet by niels gade in f major op.17. also 2 sextets by brahms, g major op.36 and b flat major op.18. if you would like to write my email address is marianne3000@talk21.com although im only 14 young peoples opinions on classical music these days are hard to find, so we should be listened to. thank you. m

4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite competitive in the Mendelssohn, but recommended for the Bargiel, 29 July 2011
By G.D. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Mendelssohn/Bargiel: Octets (Audio CD)
Mendelssohn's youthful octet is of course a remarkable masterpiece, an unrivalled description of sheer optimism and "the good" in music (I don't remember who said it, but I think the statement "I want to *be* Mendelssohn's octet" indicates what the music succeeds in capturing). It has received some very strong performances as well, and - to make a long story short - this one, by Divertimenti, is not really competitive. Yes, there is spirit and exuberance in the opening movement and grace and depth in the Andante (perhaps the best movement in this performance), but the Scherzo and Finale sound frantic and cold, lacking the kind of strong-current ebullience that the best versions, such as the Academy Ensemble or ASMF, manage to realize. It is not a bad performance overall, really, but there is just so much more to find in the final two movements. There is also something slightly off with the balance between instruments (not, I think, the recording's fault) that tends to undercut some of the power and momentum of the music.

Still, this disc deserves a firm recommendation for the coupling. Woldemar Bargiel (1828-1897) was Clara Schumann's step-brother and a very fine composer in his own right. His octet is a relatively early work, but a remarkable near-masterpiece. The first movement is dramatic and energetic and memorable, and the andante-scherzo combination of the second movement deviously put together and effective. True, the finale may tend toward overstaying its welcome, but is still a strongly characterized, inventive movement with an individual stamp on it. In short, it is a splendid work very well worth investigating, and (at least in the absence of any alternatives) the brilliant, spirited Divertimenti performance does it justice. The sound is up to Hyperion's high standards, and overall this disc deserves a firm recommendation (though it shouldn't be anyone's only recording of the Mendelssohn).
