An excellent bidding toolset to help you compete strongly, 29 April 2001
By A Customer
Recommend a bridge book to help my opponents compete better against me? I must be mad! ...But that is just what 'Guide to the Bidding Battle' achieves. If you are a competent bridge player, competing reasonably at the club duplicate session, or holding your own at a social Chicago session at home, you are ready for this book. If, like me, you feel that somehow you're not competing hard enough for contracts, then read GTTBB. This book does just what it says on the cover. You will improve your competitiveness, you will win more often. The merit of GTTBB comes from its easy-to-read informal style, its short yet well-explained sections, and sample hands. These fit together like an emerging jigsaw to show you the power that is in your dealt hands, strong or weak, to disrupt your opponents and find your best contract - or push them into their worst. The book does not seek to cover the basics of bidding or overcalling. Instead, discover the secret skills of Transfers (including 'Breaking' and 'Bouncing'), the Total Trumps Principle, Balancing, Negative Doubles, Splinters and other keys to good bidding. Such exotic names for so may good techniques for success! The book is not for experts. It is for those that want to improve. It can be studied in sections, and it is most enjoyable to re-read a section after putting it into practice, discovering small corners of technique that were missed first time round. I particularly gained from the sections on Overcalling, using the Total Trumps Principle (a most powerful disruptive tool), and the complete Transfers sequences. I expect to be still learning from this book for many years to come. If I have one complaint, it is that the physical production of the book is poor. There are some spelling mistakes, it contains an errata insert of typesetting errors, but most annoyingly, the glue on the spine is so weak that the pages start to moult after serious usage. This is a pity, as it spoils the reading experience. In summary, an excellent and humourous volume, which really can improve your competitive bidding. I hope Paul will write a companion volume on defensive and declarer play, as thanks to his written tuition those are now my weaker areas. Lastly, to all my opponents out there - Don't Read It. I need all the advantage I can get!
