The astonishingly and presumably deliberately inept artwork of this debut from Californian skate-punks OPM helps create a carefully contrived image of a bunch of lads intent on loafing about doing as little as possible. The threesome's modus operandi--sun, sex, tattoos, getting stoned and travelling the streets on four small wheels--is cemented by the opening tracks "Stash Up" (a paean to smoking grass and not giving a flying one for anything) and "Heaven Is A Halfpipe" (a surprisingly catchy singalong about the joys of skateboarding). Menace To Sobriety's boisterous, good-time feel sprawls across its 15 tracks like a teenager on a particularly comfortable sofa, its bleach-top college rock roots (Blink 182, Sugar Ray) regularly spiced up by Latino piano and horns, ska rhythms, hip-hop textures and noisy raps. --Mike Pattenden

First off, I would like to say I am not at all a fan of rock music. My main influences come from rap, hip-hop and soul music.
I suppose I purchased the album because of Heaven Is A Halfpipe. Me being a rollerblader, I could some what "feel" the song. I was expecting an OK album with a few good songs. I was mistaken.
From Stash Up, Better Daze, Dealerman and Heaven Is A Halfpipe the album is absolutely great. Thats without mentioning El Captain, Brighter Side and Undercover Freak.
Each track on the album stands out. "Stash Up" being the most furious track, Heaven Is A Halfpipe being the singing anthem, Brighter Side being the more sensitive side of the band and Rage Against The Coke Machine being extremely funny the first time you hear it.
This album "rocks" in every sense of the word. There a unique band, who I couldn't descibe being the same as any other band. If you have to buy one album in your life then it may have to be this.
The California sound is alive and doesn't only live inside of rappers... but OPM!

Hi!
OPM- three boys from California taking on the "skater" style whilst adding the new "alternative rock" attitude to their music.
"Stash up" is the first song on the album. This is when you realise why there is a parents advisory label on the front. Slightly boring, and the same inappropriate word used over and over again-how inspiring!
The Interludes in this CD are quite catchy in themselves, and give a break from the harshness of some of the songs. The first interlude is followed by "Heaven is a Half Pipe" which I'm sure is known to everyone thinking of buying this album, in-fact it was that song which inspired me to buy the album.
"El Captain" is definitely my favourite out of all of the songs on the track, in my opinion it will probably succeed in the way that "Heaven is a Half Pipe" did.
If you enjoy music from bands/groups such as Blink 182 etc, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this CD. However if you're into more laidback kind of music such as "Heaven is a Half pipe" I would recommend "Wheatus's Album" or something along those lines!
Hope this has helped.
Rebecca Jones

My first interaction with OPM was heaven is a halfpipe. It was a good song but it didnt inspire me to buy the album. What did though is the strength of the other songs like El capitan, better daze and fish out of water.i recomend borrowing the cd first but believe me this is a brilliant album and the perfect antidote for anyone whos sick of slipknot and linkin park

I suppose in many ways, this band knew they had a hit single with their skater anthem "Heaven is a Halfpipe" and it is very believable, Shakey Lo's singing along with the smooth guitar playing at the start make it a very uplifting song and also extremely catchy.
So what does that leave for the album? Well Menace To Sobriety sits perfectly in any collection, even if you bought it for that single. Songs about drugs (Dealerman, Better Daze) and all round lifestyles of California (Sound System, Fish Out Of Water) infest this album and make it very much an enjoyable listen.
Reccommended tracks have to be Undercover Freak, Heaven Is A Halfpipe and Brighter Side, one listen to these tunes and you will have a smile on ya face from ear to ear.
Great stuff worth ya cash!! buy buy buy

For those of you who are still mourning the sad demise of the multi faceted Sublime'There is a new 3 piece who like Sublime merge Hip Hop, Punk, Regge into one chilled phat summer record .To say it only sounds like Sublime doesn't realy do this album true justice It will also appeal to fans of the Chili Peppers,Beastie Boys etc.You just have got to get this CD

This cd really is worth getting if you like fun mellow punky hip hop, with often funny lyrics too, After hearing heaven is a half pipe i had to go find this album, and Iam glad i did. The best thing is there is a lot of quallity tunes not just the usual 3 or 4, Go get it!
