More About the Author

Born in 1935 in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, Charles Roger Hargreaves is Britain's third best-selling author of all time having sold more than 100 million books, including all the familiar Mr. Men and Little Miss characters. Roger Hargreaves followed a career in advertising before becoming an author and illustrator.

He wrote the first Mr. Men book in 1971 when his 8 year old son, Adam Hargreaves, asked 'What does a tickle look like?' In response, Roger drew a figure with a round orange body and long, rubbery arms and Mr. Tickle was born.

He initially had difficulty finding a publisher, but once he did, the books became an instant success, selling over one million copies within three years and spawning a BBC animated television series, narrated and voiced by Arthur Lowe.

By 1976, Roger Hargreaves had quit his day job as creative director of a London advertising firm. In 1981, the Little Miss series of books began with Little Miss Bossy. They were also made into a television series in 1983, which was narrated by John Alderton and Pauline Collins, who voiced the Mr. Men and Little Misses respectively.

Although Roger Hargreaves wrote many other children's stories, including the Timbuctoo series of twenty-five books, John Mouse, and the Roundy and Squary books, he is best known for his Mr. Men and Little Miss books. With his wife, Christine, Roger had four children: Adam, Giles, and twins Sophie and Amelia who were the inspiration for Little Miss Twins.

Roger Hargreaves died suddenly of a stroke 11 September 1988. Adam has continued to write and draw the Mr. Men and Little Miss characters in new stories. In April 2004, Christine sold the rights to the Mr. Men characters to the entertainment group Chorion.

with the newest set having 50 books in it.

They come in a sturdy cardboard drawer presentation box that slides out fairly easily, although you cannot get the later books out without removing the earlier ones first. I am also not sure how long the box would last, it is well built but may eventually tear/collapse if tugged open by enthusiastic small children too often.

All of the existing 50 Mr Men books are in the set, from 1971 through to present day, although there are none of the 33 Little Miss books. The spines of the first 39 books line up with 'My Mr Men Library' written across them along with the worm that frequently turns up in the stories.

Other than that they are the same format, shape and size as they have always been and being timeless are as suitable for new generations to discover as they ever have been, but much cheaper than buying them as separates.

Have to say this is one of the best things I've ever bought for my son given the vast amount of time value he gets out of it. He enjoys going through the books looking at all of the pictures before he carefully decides which one I actually have to read. The stories are all very fun and have a bit of a teaching process as well - Mr happy always comes out on top whereas characters like Mr Mean and Mr Grumpy see the error of their ways and change to become good.
An expensive initial outlay as Childrens books go but well worth it in my opinion as your kids will just come back over and over to these books.

This complete series of books was an instant hit with my son.

Although not yet reading the pictures are colourful and consist of many shapes and basic objects keeping him interested whilst the stories are being read.
All stories are in plain and simple English which is ideal for beginners but still interesting enough for the more advanced reader (I still love them!).

"Mr Funny's car is a shoe! It looks very funny when he drives to the zoo. But can he cheer up the animals? Mr Dizzy always gets things confused, until one day he happens upon a wishing well ... Mr Bump tries his hand at many jobs, but keeps getting fired! Will he ever bump into one that's suitable for him? Mr Fussy is a fussy old fusspot who dusts his flowers and irons his shoelaces! So how will he cope with Mr Clumsy? Mr Topsy-Turvy manages to turn a whole town upside down! Mr Small goes job hunting and finds, after all, he's perfect as he is."

Every parent knows how useful children's audio books can be for car journeys, short or long. Each short (circa 7 minutes) story focuses on a new character and contains a simple moral message. They are intended for primary school-age children.

If you're not familiar with the Mr Men or the 1970s animated BBC series, you're in for a treat; if you are, it'll be a trip down memory lane. The CD includes the stories about Mr Funny, Mr Dizzy, Mr Bump, Mr Fussy, Mr Topsy-Turvy and Mr Small written by one of Britain's most successful children's authors, Roger Hargreaves (d. 1988), narrated by Dad's Army's Captain Mainwaring actor Arthur Lowe (d. 1982). Lowe has excellent diction and, as an actor, brings the characters of each Mr Man to life with a mixture of humour and stuffy formality. These audio books are the voiceover by Lowe for the original animated series by Flicks Films with the original Mr Men theme music by Joe Campbell and Tony Hymas.

As all these stories are from the 1970s, they are a little bit dated (for instance, in terms of gender roles) but are still delightful.

THIS IS A REVIEW OF 2013 RELEASE OF THE MR MEN SOUNDTRACK FROM THE BBC. THIS HAS TO BE MENTIONED BECAUSE THE AMAZON SYSTEM IS POSTING LINKING REVIEWS OF IT AND POSTING THEM ON OTHER PRODUCT PAGES

Back in the 1970's, the BBC made a cartoon series based on Roger Hargreaves popular children's books about the Mr Men. Characters whose names begin with Mr and then have another word which describes them rather well.

These were short and simple books, with simple but appealing artwork. Thus they translated well to cartoon.

Arthur Lowe narrated the adaptations, and did all the voices as well.

This is a cd re-release of a bbc record released back in the day, which contained the soundtrack to six of the Mr Men tv stories.

The ones featured are:

Mr Funny. Who cheers up sick animals at the Zoo.
Mr Dizzy. Who gets confused. But gets to deal with those who laugh at him.
Mr Bump. Who is very accident prone, but wants to find the right job.
Mr Fussy. Who is very house proud. Unlike his visiting cousin.
Mr Topsy Turvy. Who manages to rather confuse things.
Mr Small. A small fellow who is also looking for the right job.

All of these run for roughly seven minutes approx. And have the opening and closing music from the tv. Since that tended to run two cartoons together to form one programme, you do on some get the linking narration.

The Mr Men are timeless children's classic. Fun and silly yet strong in the writing as well as to never be silly just for the sake of it. The characters are a lot of fun also.

The narration is quite superb, Arthur Lowe's voice suiting it so well. And he's very versatile in the reading with it, doing many different voices and changing his tone when required.
