Product Description

Product Description

1891. Illustrated by the author. Pyle is best known for the children's books that he wrote and illustrated. It is from his famous Book of Pirates that our present-day concept of pirates has come. School children still read his Men of Iron, The Story of King Arthur and his Knights, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and many other tales. In Men of Iron young Myles Falworth wins a reputation for courage and independence while still in training at the castle of the great Earl of Mackworth. But one day he discovers that his blind father had been condemned for treason and is still being hunted by a powerful enemy who is close to the King. To challenge the King's champion means certain death. Should he risk all to win back his family's honor? I read this book as a young teenager, and not only will I never forget it, I'll buy a copy for each of my nephews. Though the reader won't know it for many years after reading it, this book contains the seeds of what the word 'ethics' used to mean: the values which you live by and uphold. Everyone develops their own set of ethics, and Pyle shows some honorable and laudable ones to start with.

I liked this book, although it did take me longer to read than such a book usually would. It is an original story about the son of a disposessed Lord who must restore his family's honour. It terms of historical accuracy it is quite good, especially when it comes to descriptions of weapons and armour.
The main obstacle for me was the archaic langauge. It wasn't middle english, but seemed to be a slightly modified form of 16th century shakespearean style langauge passing off as the above.
This is marketed as a children's book, but I think younger children would have real trouble understanding this, even i did at times, so might find it boring. If you have the patience to plough through the tedious parts, and get past the langauge however, it is quite and enjoyable book.

The ancient knight was middle ages equivalent of a modern tank...The "making of a knight" from the life of Myles Falworth is a life worth reading about...in this age of keyboards and mouse-clicks, one wonders if we of this present age could find the fiber to stand up to the likes of Myles...Somehow I doubt it...must reading for teenagers
