Book Description

Short stories from Mark Billingham, Reginald Hill, Jeffery Deaver, Dennis Lehane, George P. Pelecanos, Peter Robinson and other masters of crime fiction

Product Description

Little is perfect for the men in these seventeen crime stories and nothing is straightforward. The worlds they inhabit are as different as a deprived London housing estate and a rundown jazz joint in Manhattan, but each of them is striving to determine what is right, what will give them dignity, what will earn them self-respect. Some succeed. Others fail. In this acclaimed collection of stories, John Harvey has gathered together some of the very best names in contemporary crime writing. Together these writers answer what it is to be a father, a son, a man. Authors are: Mark Billingham, Lawrence Block, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, John Harvey, Reginald Hill. Bill James, Dennis Lehane, Bill Moody, George P. Pelecanos, Peter Robinson, James Sallis, John Straley, Brian Thompson, Don Winslow, Daniel Woodrell, and a novella by Andrew Coburn.

Bang on target 10 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
"Your father picks you up from prison in a stolen Dodge Neon with an eight-ball in the glove compartment and a hooker named Mandy in the back seat." This is the riveting opening line from a marvellous short story by Dennis Lehane - one of seventeen contributions from seventeen masters of contemporary crime fiction - including also Mark Billingham, Lawrence Block, Michael Connelly, Jeffery Deaver, John Harvey (who edited the collection too), Reginald Hill, George Pelecanos, and Peter Robinson.

From the rat-infested trenches of the First World War near Passchendaele to the present day mean streets of Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC and elsewhere these gripping stories explore the bonds of friends and family. Little is perfect in these relationships - murder, robbery, fraud, revenge and more are on the menu.

John Harvey is to be congratulated on editing an exciting and truly excellent collection with something to suit all fans of the genre. Very satisfying and highly recommended.

strong suspense anthology 29 Jun 2005
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The sixteen short stories and one novella (Andrew Coburn's My Father's Daughter) focus on men coming of age when faced with a crisis that makes each protagonist have to use a path that will hopefully leave them with self-esteem and respect. Interestingly none of the characters are similar in temperament, varying in social or economic class and even age as some boys do not become men until their thirties and older. The settings also vary from Manhattan to the World War I front and obviously differing time periods. What they have in common is that each tale is a superb suspense thriller with the center being a boy turning into a man trying to cope with difficult situations that mature someone rather quickly and that the authors are all men. John Harvey of Charlie Resnick fame brings together a virtue hall of fame of male suspense writers and each hits a thrilling home run.
