Product Description

Product Description

This text is a collection of historical accounts of 18th-century roguery, criminality and skull-duggery. It features a diverse gallery of criminals, ranging from infamous thieves and murderers, whores and highway men, pirates and fraudsters. With extracts from popular journalism and biographical accounts, this volume presents the 18th-century criminal underworld in the idiomatic language of the time.

About the Author

Lucy Moore is a freelance historian. She is the author of The Thieves' Opera and a biography of Lord Hervey, Amphibious Thing (Sept 2000). She is currently working on a biography of Richard II for Viking.

This review is from: Con Men and Cutpurses: Scenes from the Hogarthian Underworld (Penguin Classics) (Paperback)
The cover alone promises a walk on the wild side of Georgian England, a You ar There version of every bodice ripper ever written.

In reality, this ia a rather dry compendium of stories, arranged by category of sin (pickpockets, bawds, highwaymay, foot-pads) with no real connecting link, no development of insight into the conditions and mores of the time.

Disappointing
