About the Author

Dwight Lyman Moody was a predominant evangelist, author, and publisher. Raised on a farm in Massachusetts, he moved first to Boston, where he converted to evangelical Christianity in 1856, and then to Chicago, where he prospered in business. He gave up business in 1860 and engaged in missionary work with the YMCA. He founded Moody Church and preached in the slums, emphasizing literal interpretation of the Bible and the need to prepare for the Second Coming. In 1870 he teamed up with the hymn writer Ira D. Sankey, and they began a series of highly popular revival tours in Britain and the U.S. Moody founded the Northfield School (1879), the Mount Hermon School (1881), and the Chicago Bible Institute (1889; now the Moody Bible Institute).

5.0 out of 5 stars Godly perspective 31 Oct. 2011
By Chris
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked the direct style of DL Moody. This is not a long book and it covers several key characters in the Bible. Sometimes the orators style means that it soars beyond what is written and speculates on what may have been happening rather than sticking to the facts, but that is a minor quibble.
On the whole it was a pleasure to read simple and clear expositions by a Bible believing man of God. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fabulous, uplifting read! 11 Mar. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is great for many reasons. If you're not a Christian, it should be of some historical interest anyway since it's by D L Moody, the famous 19thC American evangelist. If you're a Christian, you should read this book as it will lift your spirit. You can hear Moody's voice and simple style through the pages and his style is as fresh as when it was written.

These are talks about different men from the Bible with different angles on each. They contain basic Bible truths, but Moody's style is so winsome that it makes you smile. And it's short - an easy evening's read. And free!

Read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Uplifting 3 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is well worth reading - if only for the wonderful crescendo of his insights into the incident of the repentant thief crucified beside Jesus at Golgotha. D.L. Moody writes with passion that can move men's hearts. I read this in the run up to easter and I was lifted high in awe of Jesus and God's love for us.

Please remember, however, that D.L. Moody lived between 1837 and 1899 and witnessed the American Civil War. Those times were quite different to our modern world. Any sin-consciousness or legalism which may appear in the writing should be judged in light of the environment, culture and understandings of the writer's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 12 Jun. 2014

I love this book so much. It teaches lots of things about the faith of these men of God, and what we can learn from them. It also taught me how to speak to non believers ,I.e by giving example about the thief and how he was saved and live with our Lord. Thank you brother for contributions to the kingdom of Christ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 4 Mar. 2014
By Chris Morse VINE VOICE

My first venture in to Moody. He has a wonderful way of writing/speaking. He takes well known characters and basically put's himself in their positions, adding a whole new way of looking at some very familiar stories.
There are a few other free Moody kindle books on Amazon, so get those too.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4/5. 17 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An extremely worthwhile read, and even more worth to the reader. Moody writes with an elegance coated in boldness and his understanding and interpretation of the love poems, letters and manuscripts that make up the Bible is truly admirable and personally envious.

5.0 out of 5 stars worthwhile read. 11 Mar. 2014

A thought-provoking and insightful study of nine significant men from the Old and New Testaments. Recommended reading.
Pity there aren't any subsequent volumes dealing in a similar way with another selection of men and women.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read (Kindle) 9 Dec. 2012

Written from a conservative evangelical standpoint. See my comments under "Bible Character" by Moody. An excellent read and great value. You will not be disappointed. It is a pity that there are not more studies in the book.
