" Action is Smith's game, and he is a master."
"-- The Washington Post Book World"

Book Description

It is the age of empire, of blood and conquest, of boundless excitement and possibility. Striding in the footsteps of the pioneers is Zouga Ballantyne. His dream begins in the danger and drudgery of the diamond pits and ends up on the rich grasslands of Matabeleland - but not before a king and a proud warrior nation have paid the price of history...

5.0 out of 5 stars MEN OF MEN 15 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
In this the second of the four books Wilbur Smith has written about the Ballantyne family, he continues as in the first with excitement, hardship and struggles. The struggles and dissapointments of life and each other come across loud and clear. There is a brillant plot and you see how people can change. The plot runs smoothly and at different stages of the book, new or old charcters are brought into play. This is a brillant book well written and I recomend it to you. If you read the first book A Falcon Flies first it will make this read more enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read 24 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Although this is actually part of a trilogy, Men of Men is the single most gripping, enjoyable and moving book I have ever read. I have now read it several times and always enjoy it as much as the first time. Wilbur Smiths' obvious knowledge of and love for his country and its people shine throughout the book, and it always leaves me yearning to go to Africa. One of his greatest skills is in writing about fictional characters whilst setting them amongst historically accurate events - if only history had been like this at school! The other parts of the trilogy - A Falcon Flies and The Angels Weep are also amongst his best. Read this book - you will fell better for it"

4.0 out of 5 stars MEN OF MEN 23 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback
Ripping good read set against the backdrop of early diamond mining and man's greed for wealth and power at all costs to others.
A brilliant story with real characters that you can both loathe and sympathise with. Second in the Ballantyne novels and well worth picking up the third instalment as well!

Nothing to complain about this second novel in the Ballantyne episodes. Descriptive, well detailed. You can almost feel the characters, animals and the countryside coming alive.
