It may sound strange coming from an American, but the Mosquito has always been my favorite WW II aircraft, at least ever since I saw "633 Squadron" in the late '60s. I had a fair number of Mosquito programs on VHS, and I have largely done the same with DVDs. And if you only get one Mosquito program on DVD, this is the one to have, since you triple your pleasure with 3 programs on one disc.

"Men and Mosquitos" is about 55 minutes, and combines combat footage with interviews with people who were associated with the Mosquito program in some way (including noted test pilot Eric Brown). It concludes with a unique effort to rebuild a Mosquito almost from scratch!

"Mosquitos Airborne" is also about 55 minutes and is a program I previously had on VHS. It is a very well-rounded documentary about Mossie development and service history, though not surprisingly, some of the footage is a bit repetitious. By itself this would be good to have; in this set it is even better value.

"Mosquitos in the Making" is a much briefer program, about 17 minutes, which simply follows the construction of a Mosquito from start to finish, highlighting some of the unusual techniques that this "Wooden Wonder" needed in its fabrication.

Taken together, this makes a good all-around look at this famous warplane.

This DVD features 3 titles: "Men and Mosquitos", "Mosquitos airborne" and "Mosquitos in the making". Each title has original footage and in the case of the first two, interviews with veterans. The last title was shot in 1945 and is a fascinating account of the construction of "The Wooden Wonder". Some of the narration in the first two titles is a little "flat" but that is more than compensated for by the wonderful shots (some in colour) of the plane in flight and the interviews with the veterans. With a running time of 2hours 10 minutes this DVD is worth every penny!

These three films may not carry the polished production values of say, a contemporary BBC endeavour, but that takes nothing from the watching enjoyment. Some of the narration is a little stiff, none more so than the dry delivery of the third instalment, but this is of the time. The thing that carries it for me is the obvious love for this magnificent aircraft shown by all involved. Talking heads can be a bit of a turn off for some, but there's no hint of a filler with the contributors to this trio of documentaries. To listen to the developers, test pilots, auxilliaries and fighting men who took the mosquito to war is humbling as it is informative. If you treat what are three seperate stand alone docs as a three part series then the affectionate almost homee movie approach to the first and dry 1946 "making of" of the third act as fine bookends to the more rounded and professional presentation of the second.
Great footage from actual raids are clear and fascinating, and I did not have any complaints with picture quality despite the disclaimer at the start. Its onboard wartime footage, and you get what you'd expect. Above all though, its the love of an aircraft from those that designed, built, flew and have reason to thank it that shines through. A value for money package and I recommend it. tipcrow.
