Product Description

RE-PRESS: CD ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 2006. Well...Dale Hawkins, out of Louisiana; yeah, everyone knows 'Suzie Q', the megahit classic song written and recorded in 1957 by Dale and James Burton...and covered by EVERYONE! And some people know of Dale's successful production career with the likes of Mouse & The Traps, 5 Americans, Bruce Channel, Ronnie Self, Michael Nesmith and Harry Nilsson... and a few even know of his years as a top DJ, TV host, and major label A&R man (for Bell and RCA). BUT... even they will be surprised by this amazing album! Cut on his travels whilst producing all manner of records in the three Music Cities of the title, 'LA, Memphis, & Tyler, Texas' is a triumph of 1969 simmering Swamp-Rock/Blues brilliance! Cut in three CLASSIC and LEGENDARY Rock'n' Roll studios, Joe Osborne's in LA (famed for the lost Jan and Dean album Save For A Rainy Day and the first Carpenters recordings!), Ardent in Memphis (home of so many legendary soul sessions, and the cult genius of Big Star), and Robin Hood Brians' in Tyler, Texas (home of so many garage legends and soul/country classics!). Featuring old pal James Burton (on the cusp of swapping sessioneering for the Elvis TCB Band!) and LA stalwarts Joe Osborne and Ry Cooder...as well as Taj Mahal, Mouse And The Traps and legendary soul horn player Wayne Jackson; all giving their best for an icon of Blues, R&B and Rockabilly. With INTENSIFIED sound, innovative packaging, and a detailed liner note by Tim Tooher, this is an album you need in your life! Contemporary and on an artistic par with 'Dusty In Memphis' and 'From Elvis In Memphis', this is truly a missing link in Rock and Soul history! Never before on CD anywhere, wonderfully remastered and beautifully packaged. A total MUST for everyone...your life is seriously lacking without this album!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Gold 29 Mar 2007
By Charlie
Format:Audio CD
This album has nothing in common with classic Del Hawkins recordings from 50's era. What we have here is excellent mixture of swamp blues & soul music and this is truly a masterpiece! When you here the first notes you can tell it's special. It rock's all the way through.
Well known songs like Hound Dog, Candy Man, Baby What You Want Me To Do & Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town get new approach here.
Highlights would be 'Little Rain Cloud', 'La La La La' and 'Back Street'.
Del backed up with James Burton,Joe Osborn, then unknown Ry Cooder,Taj Mahal,Mouse And The Traps and Wayne Jackson & Memphis Horns
in all their glory. This is re-release of original and 'lost' album.
Nice package & liner notes with Del's remarks.Sound on this cd is amazing too! Five stars - no doubt!
* Update
I would strongly disagree with other reviewers who said this songs sound like demo versions! Did you actually heard this cd or just listened samples i can't tell, but to say that Dale is 'rather poor vocalist' is blasphemy, you don't have to be Caruso to be called a 'good vocalist', specially in rock or blues music field.
Also, there's a reason why Dale sings 'Ruby' so 'badly', it's because of it's lyrics and history of the song being about Vietnam war veteran in a wheel chair. I hope now u get it?
Some people just don't dig cool music.

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable and unique 7 July 2007
Format:Audio CD
Have only just got this album and have not been able to assess it fully but what I have heard already and enjoyed forced me to rate this as 5 stars to compensate for the completely unfair review that only gave it 1 star.
The vocals are not fantastic but do not detract from some great music here and have an honest emotional feel to them giving a pleasing uniqueness. The guitar work and production is amazing in places. If you like great music from this era then this is another example that you should acquire.

5.0 out of 5 stars A swamp rock stunner! 15 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
The poor reviews for this album must have come from listeners who like their music clean and tidy. This is a snarly, lazy, pushed-to-the-gills swamp-soul stunner, up there with Link Wray's 1970 Polydor debut and Tony Joe White's Continued, albums that, to use Hawkins' own phrase, were "bridge-crossers", ignoring genre-divisions in favour of mixing it up in a down-home stew of gospel, blues, rockabilly, R&B and country.

1.0 out of 5 stars This should have remained in the vault. 5 April 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
There is a huge amount of hype around this CD, not least in the sleeve notes which declare "On an artistic par with contemporary milestones Dusty In memphis and From Elvis In Memphis..." Now hold on! Sweet Southern Soul is my kind of music but a bunch of what sounds like demo recordings sung by a rather poor vocalist backed up by some now legendary guitar pickers does not belong in that company. I would question if this collection should have ever seen the light of day at all as it has nothing to offer anyone other than a Dale Hawkins completist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Small but perfectly formed! 8 Mar 2007
By Mr. Christopher M. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD on the strength of the reviews on Amazon and because I think SuzieQ is one of the all time great rock songs (esp. as performed by Creedence Clearwater). The music on here is great, but at just a shade over 30 minutes long it is shockingly short by modern standards. Hence only 4 stars.
