* Our brand-new Radiants anthology "Memphis Beat" showcases a fine band who were far more than your typical British knock-off of the era. In fact, their smooth harmonies and folk/countrified arrangements bring more to mind the Searchers or Hollies. Guitarist Bob Simon was an excellent songwriter whose originals such as `Nobody Walks Out On Me' and `Seek & Find' have a class that places the Radiants a cut above the average teenage garage combo. And lead singer Randy Haspel had an innately commercial voice, best showcased on the group's memorable 1966 regional hit `Truth From My Eyes'.
* "Memphis Beat" is drawn from the group's many sessions with Phillips and his son Knox, cut between 1964 and 1966, most of which are unissued. It runs the gamut from raucous garage rock (the highly-rated `My Way Of Thinking') via jangly pop (`I Won't Ask Why') and fascinating 60s updates of Sun classics such as `Boppin' The Blues' and `Blue Suede Shoes'. The booklet comes loaded with memorabilia and the Radiants story as told by Haspel and Simon.

Important as Hell,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memphis Beat The Sun Recordings 1964-1966 (Audio CD)
By the time the first listings of Sun singles appeared in the U K there were many unknown names. One of them was Randy & the Radiants the 3rd time this name had been used-Jim Su & the Radiants from the Cuca label of Wisconsin had long gone and more recently the Radiats on the Chess label had become Maurice & Mac.So they had no problem using a name which had never been registered but to be on the safe side added the name of the singer Randy (Haspell)
This was Sun's last shout but they couldn't compete with the British Invasion or even wanted to do-the band was handled by one of Sam Philips' sons who was more aware of the Beatles,Stones and Kinks. But the British had learned at the fountain of Sun and what they took to America was only different because of the accents. The Dave Clark 5 actually had the classic lineup of sax, keyboards and guitars and one of their hits is on this collection amongs original songs by the band and a few vintage Sun ones. Thus the Radiants were America's answer to the Dave Clark 5 though never came to anything other than regional success for a band whose first single had been a cover of Dick & Dee Dee's The Mountain's High then 3 years old. Memphis sold more by a couple of later bands-the Gentrys and the Box Tops. And when Sun was bought out to become Sun International there was an album by the Gentrys on the label. Randy & the Radiants never made an album-this is a compilation licensed to the Big Beat label of Ace in the U K. The sleeve trumpets that the Radiants "beat the British at their own game" but hardly when there were no Top 100 hits but as a superb blend of Anglicized rockabilly with Searchers/Mersey beats harmonies this is as good as the Beau Brummels America wants the Radiants they have to buy from us

What A Find,
By Sputnik57 - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Memphis Beat The Sun Recordings 1964-1966 (Audio CD)
What a find for garage rock fans. This wasn't any garage rock band, it was Sun Records' garage rock band, produced by the legendary Sam Phillips and his son, Knox. The Radiants were already working when the British Invasion hit and they were among the first Memphis bands to adapt the new sounds. What makes the Radiants exceptional are their unheard original songs, which compete with any pop products of the day. They were hard rocking and used Hollies/Searchers type harmonies to make even cover songs sound unique. Of interest to Garage fans are the previously anthologized "My Way of Thinking," and "Truth From My Eyes," the band's two singles, but great songs like "To Seek and then Find," and "Nobody Walks Out on Me," are heard here for the first time. Sun Records was in its' decline during this time, which may explain why the Radiants didn't get wider exposure. This discovery from Ace Records is the remedy.
