Product Description

Product Description

The debt owed to botany by medicine is not commonly appreciated. In the past, medicine relied almost entirely on plants, and even today, many western medicines are plant-derived. Historians have largely neglected domestic medicine in favour of 'official medicine'. Although an impressive amount of information is available in primary sources, both within record offices and in private hands, relatively little has been published on British domestic plant medicine. The author has gathered a wealth of material from manuscripts, letters, diaries and personal interviews. This book brings together this information, using it to produce a vivid and detailed picture of the use of domestioc remedies in Britain from 1700 to the present day. It draws upon oral history and manuscript sources to record for posterity this neglected aspect of our heritage. Much of this has never been published before, and little modern material has been written down, and is in danger of disappearing altogether when the current generation of elderly people dies out. This book is a valuable contribution to the study of the folklore of modern Britain and is a fascinating piece of social history

This is an excellent introduction to the general reader on the history of plant medicine in the UK using oral and written sources from the last three centuries and more. For readers with a thirst for detail there are copious references, an extensive bibliography, an index of plants, as well as a general index. The last chapter briefly discusses how modern plant science is reinvestigating the potential of British plants to provide alternatives, and perhaps additions, to modern pharmaceuticals.

Hatfield (who has recently published new work on herbal folklore) has written here an interesting account of the use of herbal medicine throughout history, providing an entertaining read and a window into the lives of our ancestors, including the superstitions and folk beliefs they held and how these tied into health. Its particularly interesting to see how we still use some of the herbs mentioned in here for the same uses! Worth adding to the bookshelf of any lover of medicine, herbal or not, just for the sheer fascination of it.

Disappointing 23 Oct 2010

I bought this because I am interested in the history angle, and I liked her herbal book. However, it is very repetitive (how many times do I have to read about onion in an ear for ache or cobwebs on wounds?...)to the point where I feel it is a couple of magazine articles padded out to be a slim book. It actually informs you of very little except some anecdotes that don't really go anywhere, and that a lot of herbal lore has been lost in this country because no-one has written it down. My response would be - well write it down then! I suppose she did in the herbal. Hardly worth skimming.
