I bought the unit for use at sea. The main requirements were a good chartng GPS that wasn't Garmin, The software is OK with good raster charts, and useful features.
The GPS receiver seems to have good sensitivity.
However the touch screen management is not good, - it's quite hard to handle and all too easy to change things accidentally. The power management is awful, it turns itself on in a pocket, then runs down. It can often hangup so the only fix is to remove and replace the battery, and the back light management is all wrong.
The manufacturers are promising an update to fix some of these issues but this release has been delayed a few times.
I'd recommend checking their support forum before buying, I wish I had.
The software is available for IPhone, I thought that a dedicated hardware platform was a good idea, maybe the manufaturers did, but it just doesn't have the quality.

I really like the bits that work. If they fix the bits that don't it would be great, but I'm not holding my breath.

think twice before buying.!

I have updated my original review which can still be found at the bottom of this new updated review.

As a bloke I am rather partial to good kit. This includes a good GPS which I have found in the form of a Satmap Active10 GPS not the Memory Map Adventure 3500.

For some years I have been using the Memory Map software and electronic OS maps on my laptop. Fantastic for route planning whether walking or cycling providing data on distance and height profiles among other things, and allows you to zoom in to get a high level of detail. So it seemed a natural choice to extend my electronic mapping into the field with the purchase of a waterproof Memory Map Adventurer 3500 GPS..... or so I thought............

A review of the Memory Map Adventurer 3500 GPS is a bit disappointing. At over £360 the 3500 is not a cheap device so I expected, quite rightly, a lot from my purchase. Within days however I began to doubt my decision. I had fully charged the unit out of the box ready for an excursion on to Dartmoor the following weekend to give it a test drive. Only to find when I got into the car park to switch the unit on that it had gone totally flat in less in 5 days. Not impressed. I subsequently found out that a design fault on the silicon cover that came with the unit meant that it put pressure on the on/off button when you put it in its case. Even stored outside the case the battery seemed to drain incredibly quickly and can't be relied on.

Next outing I found that the unit came with a touch sensitive screen that you couldn't lock, meaning just a touch of the screen accidentally, easy done when walking or when raining a finger swipe to clear the screen, would take the unit off into an unwanted function.

I have just received my third unit in 2 years. The first one lasted 11 months and the second one 8 months. Performance Products???? (the manufacturer) replaced the first unit with an exchange unit but it did not come with a new 12 months warranty. Consequently, when this unit became faulty it was not covered by warranty even though it was only 8 months old. Neither Memory Map or Performance Products were prepared to accept that this was unacceptable for a product that cost £356. I was offered a new unit for £160. Technical support from both firms is well below the standard expected,in fact, both showed a distinct lack of interest in the fact that their products are well below standard.
Both units failed on the same faults:-
1 COMPLETELY useless in the rain
2 Touch screen totally unreliable, bordering on useless.
3 Screen locking up necessitating having to remove the battery to re-boot
4 Satellite locating very slow. On one occasion in clear weather it took 90 minutes
5 Technical support and warranty department very unhelpful.
I decided to take advantage of the offer to purchase a new unit for £160 and after only TWO WEEKS I am having problems with the calibration procedure.
MEMORY MAP-- Never again.Adventurer 3500 mapping handheld GPS unit - GB 1:50000

Hi, I have persevered for 2 years now with this GPS unit and its never been reliable. Often stops in mid track and warns of an incorrect shut-down. The people at Memory map are defensive of the product and infer its your fault and you are using it incorrectly. The maps on my PC and the accompanying software are excellent but the unit is not. An admission from the company of its shortfalls would help and a large discount on an upgraded unit would have been appropriate. Overall I will not buy another Memory-Map unit. I am now the proud owner of a Garmin Oregon 600 which is in a different league.

Verified Purchase
This is the worst product that I have ever purchased online. The user manual provides the very barest of instructions and it is left to yourself to figure out how this thing works or does not work in my experience.

I am actually lucky if I can get 2 hours use out of this product and that is based on it being on standby mode and then if it will actually switch itself back on from sleep mode.

I have checked the web for a fix on this and downloaded, however it still does not work. Will now have to send it back to Memory Map (at my cost as the unit is out of guarantee !!!)

I also get constant errors trying to load my current 2007 V5 maps onto the unit, apparently you can only load a maximum of 400MB of map data at a time. Why do they then supply maps which are bigger than this size!!!, obviously to cause the user maximum amount of inconvenience.

Unit also came with a scratch on the screen which would not have happened had the screen been protected by a clear lo tac tape cover.
