Memory-Map Adventurer 2800 GPS Silicone Sleeve

THE COVER
I bought the rubberised cover for it (it does then not fit in the holder) which makes it easier to grip in cold/damp conditions. First class bit of protection.
THE GPS UNIT
Having done the research I was expecting the woeful instructions on how to use it and was not surprised at the pitiful leaflet. The web site forums are essential if you want to get to grips with this equipment. The product itself is well made and all the controls are simple to use. A stylus (supplied) keeps the screen less smudged when in use. The speed and accuracy of the unit is top rate and have found no situation outdoors that it fails to track or find you.
Setting it up and getting licensed on line takes time and is not very user orientated. PC only (but possible with a mac on a pc emulator programme) which is short sighted of the manufacturers but typical. Buy a bigger flash card for it at the same time as the one supplied is a little limited if you are going to add a lot of mapping and can be set up with the license process at the same time. The free map allocation is only available at OS 1.50,000 scale and is not transferable to any other scale/map. The free OS 1.50,000 national parks maps are also included with the kit but if you then buy maps of the regions or the whole of the UK then those free offers or included maps are wasted because you have big areas of duplication. Be aware that the cost of the unit will be exceeded by the cost of the maps if you want uk comprehensive cover.
Buy maps as CDS or DVD if possible as the chances of losing/failing to register/download problems are high and the amount of money you can lose if you muck it up. Aftercare on this is through the website (no phone numbers given for help lines to compensate for the poor or no existent operating instructions).
The software with the unit seems good (again not instructions so become familiar with the help site or forums) and the unit link up straightforward. The PC needs a good graphics card (Mac will not work all the 3D stuff due to being the wrong graphics card). Two things to remember, when you plug the unit into the computer you need to press the screen button on the unit to make it appear on the computers drives list and you need to press 'refresh maps' on the unit after you have loaded any maps to make them appear and useable on the unit. I wasted hours on these two frustrating items alone thanks to the lack of written instructions.
OVERALL
The GPS unit is a good piece of kit flawed by the lack of instructions. Only buy if you a familiar with computers and are prepared to find it out for yourself. You will feel a bit frustrated at Memory Map and for the money they really should do better at helping the customer get to grips with this complicated but good piece of kit.
The cover on the other hand works well needs no instructions and makes the GPS unit easier to hold.

The sleeve was easy to put on the 2800 but difficult to take off to find the serial number on the back of the 2800 to enable downloads of the ShotSaver app. In spite of extreme care the sleeve ripped at one of the corners - less than 1 day after fitting!

Although the first one delivered split when we put it on the GPS, this was replaced quickly and without any bother or charge. Excellent product.
