The Television Personalities? I mean where do you start? I love this band and I love Dan Treacy who has been responsible for some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
But! All has not been well in the TVPs camp and Dan has had to struggle with a whole host of personal demons (homelessness, prison, addiction) that would've stripped lesser mortals of their talent and ambition. 2006's comeback album 'My Dark Places' was a cracker - A totally unexpected riot of styles and entertainment that remained glued to my CD player for months. This new album doesn't quite scale those heights, but does contain some absolute corkers that remind us just why Dan's talent is so fragile and special. The title track opens the album in uptempo bouncy style reminscent of some classic TVPs moments from the 'Privilege' era. 'The Girl in the Hand Me Down Clothes' follows and is a prime cut, laced with some great brass and string flourishes. The single 'She's My Yoko' stands up as one of the best songs Dan has ever written, it's confessional lyrics and uplifting chorus ensuring the listener is in the presence of genius.
From here on in, the album gets a little patchy, though still with some standout moments. The psychedelic and rather amusing 'People Think That We're Strange' and the truly beaultiful 'Funny He Never Married' stand out in particular. The one disappointed is in the elongated version of previous single 'My New Tattoo' - This starts off in an impressive power-pop style but a combination of Dan's erratic vocals and an ill-advised, very lengthy 'experimental' middle section mean this potential classic is still born.
I hope this album makes Dan enough money to make his life easier - His is a truly special talent, even now no other band makes me quite as excited as the TVPs when a new record is delivered.
You know what to do, buy, buy, buy! ......and while you at it, get 'My Dark Places', 'The Painted Word', 'Privilege' and 'Closer To God' at the same time!
