Product Description

From the Publisher

An uplifiting tale of life in the 1920's and 1930's.
This book was written to give an insight into the life of a young boy growing up in the Yorkshire Dales during the 1920's and 1930's. It highlights the breathtaking natural beauty of the flandscape combined with the imagination of the children within it. Later, it bears witness to the rapid deterioration of family life at the loss of a father and the struggles of a child dealing with the difficulties of growing into adulthood perhaps too soon; and the start of his working life in a local mill - a harsh existence with relatively few rewards. Nevertheless this story is an uplifiting one. As the book draws to a close, the young man meets the girl of his dreams and so begins the rest of his life, the story of which is recounted in the second volume of Ernest Patchett's remarkable autobiography, "A Life Story Full Of Fun, Laughter And Some Tears" also available from The Pentland Press.

I enjoyed reading every word... You can't put it down. You are fully present with the author as you read tales of his life. He has great description of life with a philosophical viewpoint only reached by someone who has lived through tragedies, triumphs and tribulations and came through them all with a smile on his face. A truly fabulous book....

This book is a great and well written story of one young man's experience of life in the dales. The author certainly ensures that the reader is more than eager to read the next page. His style of writing makes you want to read the next chapter and before you know it, you have read half the book!! It records details many of us will remember and children will ask about. This surely will become a valuable piece of social history. The kind of book that people should use to jog the memory's of elderly relatives before it is too late. A thoroughly enjoyable read. I am sure his second book will be every bit as good as this one. I'll let you know.
