Memories 5-track Single,
By Solstice Of Light (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memories -Limited Edition (Audio CD)
This is definitely a collector's item, but there are a couple of things you'll be interested in if you are a collector.
The start to Memories is different, so whilst the old version had a string cello type sound, this version misses out most of that. The rest is pretty much the same, if not exactly. Destroyed is as found on the uk version of The Silent Force. And the orchestral version of Aquariusis easier on the ears than the usual version, but perhaps a little less dramatic, and Sharon's voice is a little quiet, though still present, which I didn't expect! The two live tracks are the same as their usual 2-live-tracks offering.

Most complete single from The Silent Force; "Destroyed" is a must-have,
By Amanda - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Memories -Limited Edition (Audio CD)
This Within Temptation single includes five wonderful songs from the Dutch symphonic metal band, some of which had never before been released. While these are different versions of previously released songs on The Silent Force, they are a welcome addition to the sing and inject it with unique life that gives WT fans and music collectors (like me) and incentive to pick up the single. Though these may be a little obscure, they are great tracks that musical completest, such as myself, absolutely must have them.
Title track "Memories" is one of my favorites from The Silent Force album. It's deep and emotional, and has the power to reach across boundaries and make fans of WT non-believers. Heck, after hearing this song my former roommate wanted to get her hands on every piece of WT music I had. It's impossible to resist the emotion and beauty in Sharon's voice here. The orchestral version of "Aquarius" is a welcome surprise here. For me, this took a generally boring and fairly unlikable song, but the orchestral version pumps some much-needed life into it. This makes me wish that WT would release more orchestral versions of their fabulous music. Heck, even a purely orchestral CD of greatest hits would be pretty epic. I can only dream though.. There's also self-styled demo track "Destroyed." I don't know the full story behind this song, but it was left on the cutting room floor of the studio during the making of The Silent Force. Though Sharon's voice seems a little rough in the song (most likely since it's just a demo), "Destroyed" is a powerful, catchy rock song with unforgettable lyrics. It's hard to believe it just didn't make the cut for the album, with a little extra power behind it, this amazing song (complete with epic guitar riffs and full choir sections) could have become one of band's biggest songs. Just maybe, if it had progressed past demo status... Plus there's a live tracks of "A Dangerous Mind" and "Memories" from 2004. It's live tracks like this that show just how much Sharon's live performance skills have improved in only a few years (as compared to, say, Black Symphony). She, and WT, are a truly amazing band, constantly growing and maturing the skills and their sound. |
