5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful insight into a great legend 24 May 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It is a pity that this book is available only in Spanish. Readers of other languages are missing the amazing story of a real legend...in her own words!
For my money, Sara Montiel has always been the quintessential movie star... Her mesmerizing beauty and charisma were made for the cameras...She is Garbo, Dietrich, West and Loren all rolled up into one-bigger-than-life film actress and singer... Whoever saw her on the screen has never forgotten her...
So much for her immense film appeal...In this book Miss Montiel bares her soul and takes us along into the unchartered territory that has been her life. Born extremelly poor in La Mancha, her desire for beauty, glamour and success seemed condemmed to remain "the impossible dream" forever... However, through discipline, determination, talent and a little luck, the young woman rises from her humble beginnings and becomes a successful working actress that went from Spanish & Mexican films into the mythical world of Hollywood, sharing top billing with the likes of Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Rod Steiger, Vincent Price, etc. Later she would make several films in Europe that turned her into an international sensation sealing her destiny as one of the most powerful film stars of all time... It was not easy...Montiel had to fight against all odds to reach that status and then to maintain herself on top of the heap for the past 40 years... The whole experience is told in her no-nonsense style and, of course, Montiel give us here a detailed account of all her husbands, lovers and platonic admirers...her triumphs and her failures...the world she lived and her remarkable capacity to rise in spite of everything... This book is simply delightful...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Candid Memoir of a Fascinating Woman! 9 May 2013
By Beatriz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I'm glad Sarita Montiel decided to write her own memoir instead of hiring a ghost writer. I found it courageous, honest and deeply touching. I've loved her since I was a child, and I suspected even then that her life was a lot more interesting and complex than any of her movies. I was correct on both counts. Her memoir is also funny at times and I found myself laughing outloud. Hers was a difficult life from the beginning but it shaped her into one of the most compelling personalities of the twentieth century. She was a beautiful actress, who was gifted, intense, vibrant and deeply emotional. She also had a marvelous voice and was a darn good actress. I discovered that she had a good heart and did a lot of good in her life. Her recent death makes this book all the more precious, and it should be read and enjoyed by many people. It should be translated into English so more people can enjoy it and get to know this legendary woman. Now that I know her better I'm glad she went the way she did, quickly and probably not even noticing that death had come calling. She left this world as she lived it, full of joy and intensity up to the last minute. Rest in peace Sarita, it was a pleasure knowing you.
