'Memorial Beach' represented the culmination of A-ha's transformation from 80's synth-pop exponents to melancholy 90's rock band. Their metamorphosis can be traced back to the 'Stay On These Roads' album - the last of their mainstream pop outings. Even way back then they gave us an indication of where they were heading with tracks such as 'Out of Blue Comes Green' and 'You'll End Up Crying'. Then came 'East Of The Sun, West of the Moon' with it's deeply moving title track and the broody, unsettling 'Sycamore Leaves'. So now on to 'Memorial Beach' - with hindsight the title itself was an indication that this was to be their last major recording for some time. The opening track 'Dark Is the Night' establishes the tone for the album with its opening line 'It's time we said goodbye'. References to leaving and breaking up are scattered throughout the remaining tracks, most notably in 'Move To Memphis' and the closing track 'Memorial Beach'. However, as with the band's previous work, the air of despondency and hopelessness is lifted by the beauty of the underlying melodies. 'Angel In Snow' is undoubtedly the best track on the album - a simple lyrical composition intertwined with a haunting melody and perfectly delivered through Morten Harket's remarkable vocals. Overall the album is a fine addition to their repertoire and retains that indefinable quality that is unique to A-ha.

I am reviewing this as people are so unaware of how good this album really is! Before I heard this, I was well aware of its reviews and peformance in the charts. So when I put this in my cd player, I was expecting a-ha's worst album which was really a sombre swansong before they split for 7 long years. How wrong I was! A fantastic rock album, a-ha have a fantastic mix of songs here which are all well written and meaningful. Morten Harkets fantastic voice is at its brilliant best, Magne Furuholmen is excellent on Piano and keyboards and Paul Waaktar-Savoy is superb on guitars. Best songs on the album for me are, the opener Dark is the night for all, Move to Memphis and Locust. I have played this album to a lot of my friends and they have been very impressed and suprised i might add by this album. Overall this album is one of my personal favourites and shows that a-ha are more then a excellent band, they have been able to change their style of music and still produce great results. They continue to release impressive material to this day, the latest album Foot of the Mountain shows a-ha still have something very special!

They did what they wanted to do and why not (and that's not a question).

I find when I'm angry with or deeply hurt by someone my voice drops an octave with less peaks and troughs but with more edge and projection. This, for the most part, sums up my overall sensory impression of Memorial Beach. With few exceptions, emotionally it is a rollercoaster of meaty, chunky, sweaty, no-holds-barred animal utterings; feral men emerging from their pop cocoons.

When I bought my first copy of this more than two years ago I wrote brief notes for each track. I've resurrected these having just bought a second copy (my first was never 'mint' as claimed but I made do until I could no longer stand the 'hiss' on it!) and here they are, updated with my present thoughts.

01 Dark Is The Night For All: A charted single. Very dark indeed. A tuneful start leading up to thrashing about and those animal noises and super-long notes that Morten does so well drifting back down to melodic with a beautiful guitar section popping in for contrast.

02 Move To Memphis: A charted single. Noisy and abandoned. Great drumbeat and organ with gravelly vocals - deep rock - lots of variety and superb instrumental cameos and the mandatory almost guttural "Shoow.." and "Hu.." from Morten. It becomes rather busy as it builds.

03 Cold As Stone: The intro has beautiful high-pitched melodious guitar work - a lovely passage - abruptly halted by the drums fast rhythmic beating joined by almost gruff vocals by Morten. There are times when it sounds like a Neil Diamond number. At more than 8 minutes long the last third (apart from the short delightful guitar section) could have been cut as it is repetitive instrumental nothingness to my ear.

04 Angel In The Snow: A charted single.

Morten was working as a Blues singer in Norway at the time he got together with Magne and Pal to form Aha. He has said this was more of an acquired taste than a natural style for him at the time, but he mastered it by the time he quit.
You can hear the start of a Blues influence in East Of The Sun, but they really go to town with it on this album with great, gritty vocals from Morten.
The album was produced by David Z Paisley with never more than two takes for each song. So while there is high tech involved in the production, these are more or less live performances showing just what a quality outfit Aha was. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at the recording sessions!
Angel In The Snow was written by Pal in lieu of a speech for his wedding, as speeches aren't his forte luckily for us.
Absolutely fantastic in every way from start to finish, like all Aha's early stuff.
