Product Description

Boy and cat lead dull lives. Boy goes to club, gets sick and dies. His cat dies too. That sucks. Boy and cat wake up dead. Zombie boy meets zombie girl. Zombie cat likes zombie girl. Zombies break up and boy joins the Army. Now unlife is even more interesting. Meet Paul Rierson. He’s a zombie; though don’t let that fool you—Paul’s got a pretty big heart considering he doesn’t have a working one. And though he’s new to the whole un-dead experience, there’s no doubt he’s a pretty thoughtful guy. Sure he craves the taste of living flesh, and there’s that whole being hunted on a daily basis thing—zombie-life is no walk in the park—but when Paul meets Tracey Dobbs, a fellow newbie to the un-dead life, he’s smitten. He also comes to realize that in matters of life and death, perhaps being alive is not all it’s cracked up to be. Oh, and one more thing—dead people rule!

About the Author

Jason McKinney lives in Madison, Tennessee with his wife, three children, and seven pets. Most of his time is spent chained in the kitchen, but occasionally the author is unshackled so he can write. He wasted twelve years of his life as an accountant, then grew tired of balancing other people’s checkbooks and decided to follow his inspiration. Memoirs of the Walking Dead is his first published novel. Also available is his werewolf apocalyptic novel, Dog World and his children's novel of a canine sheriff in Nebraska, Sheriff Teddy and the Mysterious Egg Thieves.

Although this book was laugh-out-loud funny (not to mention gross) in more than a few places, it's real strength comes from the very human foibles and relationships the zombies still possess.
They laugh. They love. They argue. They have (undead)awkward sex, which is a sentence I never expected to write about zombies.

In life, Paul Rierson would probably have been considered a bit of a sad case. Single, lonely, hopeless at socialising. It's only after he dies that he discovers his strength, finds love, and achieves something great, almost by accident. Accompanied by Charlotte the zombie cat, and the somewhat-needy love of his unlife Tracey, Paul Rierson embarks on an epic adventure of self-discovery.

There are a lot of layers in this book. On the surface it's a slap-stick comedy featuring the undead. Scratch at that a bit and you find an intelligent and detailed consideration of society, relationships and politics; underneath the funny is a bitter-sweet sense of sorrow for what has been lost.

The most fascinating bit for me was the zombie world building. The zombies in this book can still function on a moral and emotional level - and by developing laws and a code of living, they end up on the moral high ground. Overall, a great read.

Recommended for: people with a warped sense of humour and zombie lovers looking for a different take.

Witty and fun! 23 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
If I get stuck in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, I want a cat like Charlotte at my side!

A great, fun read; laugh out loud humour interspersed with dry wit and moments of real depth. Highly recommended.

Too many mistakes 4 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fairly enjoyable zombie romp. There's nothing particularly new here... not even the idea of the protagonist being the zombie. The tale goes along at a good pace and there's a nice streak of black humour. The problem is that almost every page is filled with errors (on the kindle version) and this is a right pain as some sentences need to be read and re-read just to work out what is supposed to be being said.
