This memoir is a fascinating account of expatriate life during the mid 17th century. Lady Fanshawe is pregnant at least 18 times (bearing 15 children) during the course of just over 20 years of marriage. On top of her role as mother she also repeatedly gets sent back to Britain to procure money for her husband's expenses as a member of the court and as an ambassador. The Fanshawe family move frequently and are victims of theft at each move. Lady Fanshawe remains extremely bright and cheerful in her writing, accepting her life as it is.

Having read the introduction I was prepared for the fact that her memoir stops mid-sentence!

This edition also includes some letters her husband wrote, which I found less interesting.

Set in the time for the Civil War (UK of course) it is easy reading and has a full and useful introduction by Beatrice Marshall. The proof reading seems good. It is a transcription from the 1905 edition, edited by Beatrice Marshall, published by John Lane, The Bodley Head, London and New York, 1905. The illustrations are not included with this kindle copy but can be seen in the internet archive PDF copy. Other free copies seem to be badly (or not at all) proof read.

Good description of western Europe 30 Aug 2009

This is an autobiography by a woman whose husband was the English ambassador to Spain in the 1660s. She starts with her childhood and then goes into their married years as they traveled around England, Ireland, France, Portugal and Spain. They spent lots of time with the royalty and upper-class of those countries, and they were treated like royalty in Spain, where they were greeted by trumpets and cannon-fire everywhere they went. She likes writing about clothes and the furnishings in the houses and palaces they saw. There was an amazing amount of sickness and death which was just routine for them- they had 10 kids die young, they saw towns wiped out by plague, and when they got sick they spent weeks or months in bed. She was slightly obsessed with money, always telling how much things cost. The last 20% of the book is her husband's letters, which are completely different than hers- he's all business and she's all personal. This is an enjoyable book, and a good way to learn about life in 17th century Europe.
