""If you have never read it before, do so now . . . compelling . . . delicious insights into a way of life long passed, as well as glimpses of the familiar . . . a warm, human, revealing account of a young woman's life." --"Scottish Review of Books --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

"Memoirs of a Highland Lady" is one of the most famous memoirs ever written. Since its first bowdlerised edition in 1898, it has been consistently in print. This is the first ever complete text. Written between 1845 and 1854 the memoirs were originally intended simply for Elizabeth's family, but these vivid and inimitable records of life in the early nineteenth century, and above all of the great Rothiemurchus estate - full of sharp observation and wit - form an unforgettable picture of her time. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I read this book after visiting the highlands of Scotland for an extensive visit. The book is a great read with lots of interesting detail, giving insight into highland life as well as that of the 'well-to-do' in the early 1800s. But it isn't all Scotland. The 'highland lady' spends a significant portion of her childhood in London, visits the continent and finally lives in India for a while where she meets her husband.

Even without the historical aspect, Elizabeth Grant's family relationships are also fascinating. Elizabeth Grant was writing for her daughters and niece and is charmingly frank about her family and their doings. I really enjoyed her memoirs and plan to read her later account of her married life in Ireland in the mid 19th century soon.

well worth reading 28 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I have seen this book qouted as a footnote in many Scottish Histories, and eventually got round to reading it. It is an upper class woman's view of her childhood and young adulthood in London, India, Edinburgh and the Highlands in the early 19th C, Given it is written by a woman of her place and time, with all the notions, predjudices and conditioning involved, and little exciting happens (No sharks, no space ship, no Germans)it is a very enjoyable read. The authouress is a keen and perceptive observer and has an endearing dry style, that makes you like her - across the years

Highland lady 5 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a magnificent example of autobiographical writing, the authoress a remarkable lady, one whose humanity, intelligence, breeding and spirit shine throughout. Her incredibly detailed recounting of her childhood, her family, friends and acquaintances over a 90 year period is a joy to read. That anyone could recall with such clarity, wit and wisdom a lifetime's experiences is quite mindboggling. Each and every place, personage, relationship (and fashion) encountered is described with such verve and warmth as to bring their very recollection joyously to life before our eyes. A truly great read.
