Product Description

1908. This delightful and lively pseudonymous work was in fact written not by herself but by Baron Etienne Leon Lamothe-Langon. The persona created is that of a woman who always tells the truth as she sees it, but it is made clear to the reader that what the narrator sees is very seldom exactly the objective truth. The author ends as well as begins (in the middle of the action), thus creating an illusion of a slice of a journal but simultaneously giving the reader the uneasy feeling that the first and last chapters seem to be missing.

I proofread this book for Project Gutenberg. It took a month of extremely hard work, and I see with at least a small amount of displeasure that two people are now selling the book when I'm not. Oh well. I found it quite interesting. It is written as a slice of a real journal, and begins,

One morning comte Jean entered my apartment, his face beaming with delight.

Of course you soon find out who comte Jean is and why he is beaming with delight.

By the time you finish reading the book, not only do you understand the reason for the French revolution, you are somewhat in sympathy with it. It is a fact that Madame du Barry was guillotined by her former Negro page, and she couldn't figure out why he wanted to do it, after the way she treated him. You will have no questions as to why he wanted to do it.

Although this isn't really a memoir "by herself," the author did a tremendous amount of historical research, and the book is probably pretty accurate.
