I tink the above review is unfair. This book is a wonderful read and the details of William Dampier's observations of people, places and the climatic conditions are excellent. You could almost be one of William's buccaneer crew.

Yes the language is archaic at times but I find the cadence and vocabulary of Dampier's 17th century idiom lovely. If you can get on with the language of the King James Bible or Book of Common Prayer you will be fine. The language is wonderfully evocative. Not a light read but a satisfying one.

Brilliant edition about a most extraordinary man who contributed so much more to English history and language than given credit for

Bought this after reading Defoe's original version of Robinson Crusoe. Like Defoe this is reproduced as it was written at the time. The grammar and place names are interesting at first but I found that it soon became hard work. Before buying this you must be aware that this is a diary and not a novel. Therefore it makes a good reference but not a bed time read - unless you have trouble sleeping.
