Book Description

16 Oct 2013
Member is the account of how Thanks (the narrator) "accidentally recruited" himself into "the cosmic game of Chorncendantra." On a night stroll, he finds himself behind another walker who apparently dies and recovers. The bag carried by the unknown Lazarus passes into his possession. Investigating, he discovers that it contains a dimensional hole to another world. By accident or design, as bearer of the bag, he is now a courier, carrying messages in a cosmos-wide game he does not understand. Arriving at "the Artifact" (a vast and never-finished machine in the form of a world-dividing wall that manufactures time), Thanks attempts to decipher his own role in the game, to determine whether he can ever become, or already is, or never will be, a member.

This book is completely fantastic, cover to cover, even though it is occasionally slow-paced, and definitely overuses the word 'solar plexis.' The main story line of our rarely-named having to make a delivery without knowing the intended destination or recipient might not seem like the most original premise for a book, but the universe that Cisco creates, the complex game, gives the novel a solid story line, particularly in its second section. The poetry-like prose, the difficult-to-describe atmosphere, and the dangerously anti-social and restless attitude oozing from our protagonist combine to create a work that is wonderful. It is unlike most of anything I've read, but then I haven't read Cisco's earlier works, nor other works from solar plexis, and I am not as well versed in the Weird, or the New Weird as I'd like to be. And, even though I finished the book a fair bit ago, it contains plenty of room for thought about so many different issues. I'd talk about them here, but I hate spoilers.

To say this is highly recommended is an understatement. Oh, and the Chomu press edition is quite pretty too!
