Review
I can think of no singer, unless it be Pierre Bernac who is now rather a veteran, who could hold a candle to Souzay in this collection and the light, easy placing of the voice in relation to Dalton Baldwins immaculate piano accompaniment is very happy indeed. These are wonderful songs; witty, sad, poetic, fetching if I may use the word, and I find that many of them sing in your memory endlessly. In brief since more criticism of a fault finding nature is out of place a collection to acquire and cherish --Poulenc review,Gramophone 1969
Pierre Benac's pupil and sucessor, Gerard Souzay,was a stronger,more rich-toned performer.Unfairly overshadowed by Fischer-Dieskau,his more fluent style is a benchmark for french Melodies. Performance **** Recording **** -- --BBC Music Magazine,Sept 2010
This is a monument to the art of Gerard Souzay, the velvet -voiced French Baritone, who died in 2004. Overshadowed outside France by his contemporary Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau,Souzay should nevertheless rank as one of the most elegant and sensitive song interpeters on record, as this collection of music by Faure,Ravel,Polenc and Duparc(among others)demonstrates. Poulenc's Priez pour paix and Hahn's L'Heure exquise show him at his exquisite best. ***** ----Rupert Christiansen,Sunday Telegraph,03/07/2010
