CD Description

Dinah Washington (1924-1963) was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century -- beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics who still accuse her of selling out her art to commerce and bad taste. Her principal sin, apparently, was to cultivate a distinctive vocal style that was at home in all kinds of music, be it R&B, blues, jazz, middle of the road pop -- and she probably would have made a fine gospel or country singer had she the time. Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing. Washington's personal life was turbulent, with seven marriages behind her, and her interpretations showed it, for she displayed a tough, totally unsentimental, yet still gripping hold on the universal subject of lost love. She has had a huge influence on R&B and jazz singers who have followed in her wake, notably Nancy Wilson, Esther Phillips, and Diane Schuur. Dinah Washington's first solo recordings (with the exception of a session supervised by Lionel Hampton in 1943) are included on this repackaging of her Apollo sides. Recorded in Los Angeles during a three-day period, the 12 selections feature the singer with a swinging jazz combo that has tenor-saxophonist Lucky Thompson, trumpeter Karl George, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Charles Mingus among its eight members. The 21-year-old Washington was already quite distinctive at this early stage and easily handles the blues and jive material with colour and humor. Tracks: Mellow Mama Blues / All Or Nothing Blues / Rich Man's Blues / Chewin' Mama Blues / Blues For A Day / Wise Woman Blues / My Voot Is Really Vout / Pacific Coast Blues / Beggin' Mama Blues / Walking Blues / No Voot No Boot / My Lovin' Papa

This is exactly what I wanted, her earliest Apollo recordings, before she became the undisputed Queen of the Jukebox in the fifties, at a very good price! Thank you Amazon!!!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff! 28 Dec 2010

Fine work by Washington, Lucky Thompson, Milt Jackson (his first recording session), a young Mingus on bass and Lee Young on drums, among others. Great stuff by some fine musicians feeling their way into the new bop sound (the records were all cut in December 1945).
