I bought this wooden sorting & stacking board for my 18 month old twins, even though the recommended age is 2 years old. Both boys started by putting any colour and shape on any wooden pin, but as I demonstrated how to sort with the shapes and colours correctly, they soon started doing it correctly too. They took maybe a month at the most to show this skill. I now ask, "can you give me the red one", for example, and they are beginning to respond to this sort of request. Eventually, I will be asking if they can give me the green circle, or the yellow triangle. The wooden pieces are well painted, but my boys don't tend to bite them. I think these wooden pieces are of good quality, but would not suit a child who still bites objects frequently.
