E Nesbit is one of the greatest children's story-tellers of all time, and her enduring influence is everywhere in the Harry Potter series in that she thought through the logical consequences of magic. This lovely fairy-story about a Princess cursed, in the manner of Sleeping Beauty, to baldness, who then misuses her christening gift to have hair the redoubles in length each time it is cut is funny, romantic and even moving. PJ Lynch's pictures are, as usual, superb. This was one of my children's favourite picture books in the 1990s, and children have not changed....
