A Gem Without A Flaw,

I first heard Parisien du Nord on a flight to Saudi Arabia and was captivated by the marriage of French hip-hop rhythms to the soulful Arabic vocals of Mami. Imagine my delight on buying the album to discover that almost every track is an example of stunningly accomplished genre fusion, and ALL tracks are beautiful in their own right. Mami weaves his heartbreaking tenor in and out of the music, with complete command over 3 octaves, venturing into territory one would not expect an Arab artiste to go, e.g. the reggae of Hatachi and the floorfilling bagpipery of Azwaw, with tinges of Andalusia along the way. Although dubious on paper, musically the result is astounding. The title track, the shimmering violins on Hada Ch'hal and the sweeping anthemic rai of Bekatni are especial favourites of mine, not to mention Parisien du Nord, Mami's tribute to the disaffected Algerian immigrants of St Denis, which went to Number One in France. NB Tracks 12 & 13 are remixes of track 10 Azwaw, that is why they sound the same [see previous review].

Breath of Fresh Air,

I was initially interested in this artist because he is featured on the Sting track "Desert Rose". I bought the latest Sting album just because I wanted this particular track then decided to give Cheb on his own a go. I purchased Cheb's album expecting not to think much of it but I was wrong! I have absolutely no idea what he is singing about but that make no difference. In fact, it helps you appreciate the music more because you are not focusing on the lyrics, just the sound. There are a couple of tracks that I skip, other than that, I find it very easy to listen to and they are actually quite catchy! It is so good I would now consider buying previous albums of his. It makes a change to listen to music that is completely different to the everyday stuff you hear on the radio - I find it a refreshing change.

I got to buy this because I liked the backing singing on the Sting album. It took a bit of listening to but I can fully recommend it. His voice is unusual to me and the background music is haunting. However the last 3 tracks sound the same to me, they have different titles but the same tune. The rest of the album is great, can't stop listening.
