Product Description

Product Description

Meinl Darbukas are made in the tradition of the original, esoteric goblet-shaped drums found in music from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Southern Asia. Meinl Darbukas are constructed from thin shells in various metals, each metal giving the different models their special timbre. The head is secured and tuned with external rings set close to the shell, in the Turkish-style. Light yet poweful, the darbukas have deep full bass. They are well suited for high-pitched snapping sounds as well as a wide range of articulated "doum" and "tak" strokes.

I ordered this product for starting learning Arabic drumming. It's a fairly decent product, for the price paid. The quality is acceptable, however I have had issues with one of the tuning pegs which doesn't work very well. It was initially stuck but I did manage after 30 mins to make it budge and know it can be loosened or tightened, albeit with more difficulty. I didn't want to return the drum because the peg is working, even though less well than the other ones and I needed using the drum. I didn't want to wait for a return or a replacement.

The other thing with the drum is that it's really tiny, so while this makes it portable and light, it's very challenging to be played in the normal position for a darbuka. There is not was for comfortably resting the left arm on it for strokes using the left hand. Since I am not a professional, this is fine for me, I just wanted an introduction into Arabic drumming and I don't aim to be a professional. But I would not recommend this for anyone looking to more seriously get into drumming.

This was bought as a Christmas present and the feedback from the recipient has been good - it does what it is supposed to do.

Good Beginner one/youth sized Darbuka 15 Feb. 2011

I bought this as my first Darbuka, My girlfriend is into Belly Dance and performing so I began studying the music side of the performance. This was a fun little drum to have in our apartment but it is tiny. I would say that this is pretty much for people who have small hands to maybe medium sized hands. Anybody with hands of a person like myself (9 inches from tip of thumb to tip of pinky finger when I stretch my hands out), might have trouble playing this drum easily. So, because of its size I would only recommend this darbuka for youth and adults with medium and smaller hands.

With that I still enjoy this drum because it makes a great table piece for my apartment living room. Friends come over and as we hang out and kick it, we play with the drum on and off throughout the night. So for a good price, and the realization that this is not gonna be the one drum you will use professionally, then its a great buy for beginners or just people who enjoy drum music.
