Supports Heart Health

MegaRed Extra Strength Omega-3 Krill Oil is a valuable source of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are scientifically proven to support heart health*. The fatty acids in MegaRed Krill Oil are in a form which is similar to the cells in the human body, making them particularly easy to absorb and digest.

Efficient Absorption

Unlike some fish oils, the omega-3 fatty acids in MegaRed are carried to the body's cells and absorbed in phospholipid form. Phospholipids form the structural basis of cell membranes, meaning the omega-3 fatty acids in MegaRed are efficiently absorbed by the body.

Krill

Krill is one of the Earth's most abundant and sustainable organisms. MegaRed only sources krill from the Antarctic where krill is the most abundant. This helps the ecosystem maintain a healthy, sustainable krill population.

Krill oil. Schiff Mega Red brand.
------------------------------------------

What is it ?
---------------
Krill oil is a source of Omega 3 complexes. These oils are thought to help protect against cardiovascular diseases. Most Omega 3 is delivered in the form of fish oil capsules or Cod Liver Oil as a food additive. Krill are tiny Plankton like creatures found in the colder oceans of the World. The Krill are harvested and processed to extract the oils.

This oil is delivered in a capsule that does contain some gelatine so may not be suitable for some diets.

Research.
--------------
Looking at the available research online it is pretty much a forgone conclusion that fish oils are good for you and can help keep a healthy heart. Using Krill oil to supply these oils is a relatively new thing and the research seems patchy on whether it is as good as traditionally fish oils. Fish oils are also recommended to help keep joints supple.

I come from a family that has a long tradition of heart disease and I have always been careful to minimise the risk factors by taking regular light exercise and a good healthy diet. I don’t drink alcohol and have never smoked. I get a regular health check-up each year and at 54 so far so good I have gone the longest without heart problems as I have tried to look after myself. I have taken fish oils for years and fish is the main source of protein in my diet. Two of my younger brothers have had heart problems even though they are quite fit but they don’t take fish oils. My doctor actively encourages the use of fish oils in the diet as his own research has found it to be beneficial to the heart. As to the effectiveness of Krill oil the jury seems to be out in the research community.

hard to reveiw a suppliment but when given the opportunity to try these i got a bottle for me and my husband. i deliberately didnt look up what the krill oil did so the effects although just our opinion arent coloured by the blurb.
my husband is diabetic and has high cholesterol so these would be good for him but we as a family have noted that he appears calmer and happier these past few weeks also he himself has noticed he is more "chilled" and he said his memory seems alot better.he has a cholesterol test at the end of the month so we will see what happens there and report back.
me i seem a little less stressed and find them easier on my stomach than fish oil but i ont take them every day as i take some other medicines that can interact with these.
so i would recommend anyone interested to give them a go.

At first impressions, it might seem a bit odd that to think that ingesting some oil every day could help you live longer. However studies conducted on Eskimos (who eat very high fat diets based on fish and whale blubber) have shown that their cholesterol levels are remarkably low and that heart disease is rare. Unfortunately, dining upon whales is largely frowned upon in these parts. Should you so much as speculate about whether whale kebabs would be more appetising when seasoned gently with coriander or when smeared coarsely in Tabasco, then you can guarantee that some hippy with hairy armpits and a chronic iron deficiency will appear from nowhere and get everyone to sign a blimmin petition against you. It's a shame really, as I'd sooner get the accumulation of krill goodness a stage further down the food chain. You certainly wouldn't catch me eating expensive grass capsules every day. Far better to let some cow with four specially trained stomachs do the hard work and then reap the nutritional grassy goodness via twelve ounces of fully developed sirloin. Alas, in this case there's no choice other than to take krill oil directly, or to fly out to Canadia and build a new life from within the confines of a whaling igloo. Incidentally, the word Eskimo is deemed extremely racist in America and they have to say "innuit" instead. That might seem a bit hard on the yanks, given that we still have impunity to use the term. However, it's not all doom and gloom across the Atlantic, as every American has the constitutional right to use the word "spaz" without fellow countrymen either getting offended or writing to Terry Wogan on Points of View USA. Not unlike England's 2010 first round world cup encounter with the USA, on balance it's a 1-1 draw.Read more ›

They call this life-form 'okiami' in Japan, a nation with the longest average life-expectancy in the world. And there's plenty of it; all the krill in the world collectively weigh more than all the people in the world, and krill can boast of having the largest single animal biomass on the planet.

Krill oil, like fish oil, contains omega-3 fats such as eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). However, in fish oil, these omega-3 fats are found in the triglyceride form. I have a personal interest/concern with triglyceride levels and I was reassured to learn that supplementing my diet with krill oil can regulate genes in the liver and influence the production of glucose, fat and cholesterol metabolism.

I have been taking cod liver oil capsules for many years and I am convinced that this daily habit has been of benefit to my health. But I believe krill oil is an even better option for most people, for several reasons. I particularly appreciate the fact that the omega-3 is attached to phospholipids that dramatically increase its absorption, especially into brain tissue. High-quality fish oils are certainly great products with many important health benefits but fish oil is weak in antioxidant content, whereas krill oil contains potent antioxidants - apparently the antioxidant potency of krill oil is 48 times more potent than fish oil.

Its only drawback is that it does not contain more than a trace of vitamin D, which is nearly as important as omega-3 fats. You can remedy this however, by making sure you're getting plenty of appropriate sun exposure as that is your best source of vitamin D anyway.
