This review is from: Mega Man Starforce [DVD] (DVD)
In the future, human society has come to depend entirely on Electro-Magnetic Wave (EM Wave) technology. When alien life forms made from EM Waves come to Earth it is up to one boy and a renegade alien to save the world. Through combining their EM Waves the boy and the alien become the super-hero Mega Man.
The first thing you will notice about this series is that it is available in English dubbed format only. Unlike most Manga Entertainment releases the Japanese audio and English subtitles are not included. That is usually a bad sign for the quality of the anime as it normally means the series has been edited so much to meet the needs of a specific American audience that the original language track will no longer fit. The original Japanese series was made up of 55 episodes each 10 minutes long. In this English dubbed version the first 25 episodes have been merged into 13 episodes each 20 minutes long and, as far as I can tell, there are no plans to convert the remaining episodes anytime soon. So that means this is less than half of the original series. Episodes 1 to 7 are on one DVD rated PG and episodes 8 to 13 are on a second DVD rated 12. There are no extras or features in this set, not even the usual Manga Entertainment trailers. The quality of the voice acting in this series is abysmal, with most characters displaying the emotional level of a stick. One particular actor somehow manages to portray scenes of grief, fear, terror and joy with the same depth of feeling you would show with the words "I'd like a hamburger please." I am not sure whether this is due to the incompetence of the actors, or a deliberate attempt to remove emotions that may upset a pre-teen American audience. I am also unsure about what audience this DVD set was designed for. The low quality acting and simple plot lines imply this is aimed at pre-teen children who won't notice the deficiencies, but the 12 certificate restricts that option. Perhaps the series will appeal to fans of the Mega Man Starforce computer game. From an anime-collector's perspective though this series is a waste of time and money.
