When Meg Rivers' young children clamoured for a sweet treat, she was reluctant to give them commercial bakes made with artificial flavours, preservatives and colours. She started to bake her own wholesome cakes, traybakes and cookies using good-quality ingredients. Word spread about how delicious these treats were and her friends began to place orders. When she got her first order for a cake to be sent to Africa she decided to turn her hobby into a mail-order business and Meg Rivers Artisan Bakery was born. After Meg's death in 2001, family friend Julian Day took over the running of the bakery. In this artisan cookbook, Julian has collected the bakery's most popular recipes - inspired by English afternoon-tea classics, but with a sprinkling of influences from elsewhere in the world. About the Author

Julian Day has lived and worked in Warwickshire almost all his life. In 2001 he was approached to acquire the mail-order bakery business of Meg Rivers Cakes. Establishing new premises in a converted cow shed in Warwickshire, he began production again using the original Meg Rivers recipes. He runs the business with two of his four daughters.

I have waited for ages for this book to be published and have made the ginger, lemon and chocolate cakes. I have never ordered a meg rivers cake so have nothing to compare but the cakes I have made are very dense and a bit dry. I have followed recipes to the letter and am a bit confused as the cake company is clearly very successful and their cakes are very popular. I wonder if the cakes have to be a bit more solid to go through the post? Have the recipes been tested ina domestic setting? I really want to love this book but the cakes I have made have been a bit disappointing which is a shame as I had such high hopes. I could be doing something wrong but I think that there might be too much flour in the recipes i have tried so far .

There's nothing nicer than buying a baking book that isn't just pages and pages of typescript, but contains information about the life, home, childhood etc of the author, and this book does just that.

I can't tell you how many baking books I own (I dare not count!) and very often, they contain one and the same recipes - usually scones, Victoria Sandwich, shortbread etc (note to other authors: please NO MORE!) but if you want something different, this book is for you - it's definitely one of the best baking books I own.

Each recipe has a beautiful photograph accompanying it to illustrate the finished result, and what I particularly like is that most of the recipes are SHORT (ie no three-page convoluted guidelines) which make them easy to follow for someone whose first foray into baking may be with Meg Rivers.

I do hope Meg will produce more baking books as I will definitely be looking out for them.

Having had cakes from this bakery, I thought I would see what the book was like. It is fab and the recipes are so tempting. I particularly like these recipes as they have basic ingredients and not too many bits or complicated instructions. Mum has made 3 cakes from it already and they have all been scrummy. Just need to pick the next one now! Great purchase.

Having enjoyed the Meg Rivers cafe at Lapstone in the Cotswolds with their beautiful cakes and Mini Megs I just had to have this book and I've not been disappointed.
In fact every time I bake one of the cakes, friends ask me for the recipe, so I point them in the direction of Amazon for them to buy it too.
Every cake has come out brilliantly and I've baked a lot of them, so many to choose from including tarts and biscuits.
This is my favourite baking book and I don't know what I'd do without it!

I love this book. Fantastic range of good old fashioned recipes, perfect for home family baking. Some of the 7" recipes don't come out as well as they appear in the book but that must be something I am doing wrong!

I had this on loan from the library for months and months and couldn't resist buying it myself. The Lemon Polenta cake is a firm favourite.

This book is truly a treat in itself. Almost every recipe tempts and they all come out as they should, with no failures. One or two are fiddly and need more time or concentration but there are plenty of straightforward ones which will earn you a lot of Brownie points. This has never left my main cookbook shelf. Many are demoted after a while, but not this one.
