2.0 out of 5 stars the meeting of the spirits dvd 29 Dec 2008
I have waited for a long while to get this on d.v.d. as i have it on V.H.S from way back I was so looking forward to enjoying this on digital. The content is beyond question as I remembered , absolutely stunning performances from Paco De Lucia John Mc and Larry C. The quality of this D.V.D looks about the same as if I had copied it from my old tape. The picture quality is poor and the sound quality is awful the dynamic range is very compressed, there is wow and flutter (remember) the bass is thin and the top range very poor.I checked in my attic to see if my tape had not been nicked and copied . With a concert of such importance great care should have been given to reproducing it for posterity. All in all a huge disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Appaling Technical Qualilty 17 April 2010
Superb performances. Superb playing. Appalling quality. The video looks like it's just been copied off a VHS but the sound is even worse. Very low level noise which sounds like time code spilling over into the audio to me. It's all the way through & makes this DVD very annoying to listen to and thus I've played it once and it's stayed on the shelf since. I returned the first copy and spoke to the company that produces it. They say there is nothing wrong with it. They are obviously blind and deaf. I watched it when Channel 4 1st put it out and it was fine. Buy at your peril. Very sad for such a great performance...and I almost forgot, the photos on the front are not even from the concert!!

3.0 out of 5 stars fantastic concert 15 Oct 2010
By zargb5
Absolutely brilliant concert marred only by very poor transfer. This is very sad but is probably worth putting up with if you want to see 3 master guitarists in action. Its a great shame that no decent footage has survived the Dimeola/Mclaughlin/De lucia super guitar trio era.

If you are a fan buy this and put up with the poor sound. The sound isn't good but it is listenable.

Thank goodness labels like Inakustic are releasing dvd and blu ray concerts of the major jazz/blues artists in high definition picture and sound. Its a pity they weren't around when this was made.

track list

1. entre dos aquas 5.00 mins
2. lotus feet 3:27
3. morning of the carnival 9:19
4. meeting of the spirits 23:49
5. Guardian angels 6:27

running time 55 mins approx.

There are some brief if embarrassing shots of the 3 players in the dressing room chatting, which makes up the rest of the running time. The discographies are sadly out of date and incomplete anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars I've waited sooo long!! :( 11 Jun 2003
By M. Kupper - Published on
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
5 stars for the performance, but -4 stars for the DVD. :(

The sound on this is almost unlistenable and the picture also shakes throughout the entire DVD making it also unwatchable. I've been waiting for a DVD copy of this for years. It's finally here and it's been absolutely ruined.

EDIT: On a side note, I actually own the VHS version of this concert and it is nearly flawless. The video on the DVD shakes so bad that it literally gave me a headache. The audio contains a low pitched hum in the background that absolutely ruins the music itself. I cannot stress this enough - you will be extremely disappointed unless the manufacturers can somehow fix these problems. I bought 2 copies and had to send them both back.

EDIT #2: Some of these reviewers giving this DVD 5 stars must not have even watched this. I'll state this as clearly as possible AGAIN. The VHS performance of this released overseas has good sound and video. This DVD has horrible sound and video. It's not the 'source' material. The company manufacturing these DVDs blew it big time. I've seen this performance on laserdisc, VHS and television. All were just fine. But I had to turn off this DVD after 5 minutes - I couldn't believe how bad it actually was. It makes me mad that some people on here are giving this release 5 stars and misleading people. Please don't support companies that release fantastic concerts in such a horrible way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not So Good 27 Mar 2005
By James Green - Published on
I've been waiting years for the DVD and finally it came. I had to send it back. The sound was terrible with what sounds like time-code breaking through. The picture was OK. It's interesting that the cover shows photos which have nothing to do with the video. Wrong guitars and electric guitars. It was broadcast in the UK and I recorded it but my VHS is rather hissy. There is no excuse for the terrible quality on the DVD. The UK DVD by the way has a totally differant cover which also has nothing to do with the video. It shows what the company really thinks of it. But then why go to the expense of realeasing it when you don't really care. Illogical.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUT IT BEFORE THEY RECOVER THE PROBLEM 13 Mar 2005
By Chun-yi Wu - Published on
I totally agree the opinion of last reviewer "M. Kupper".
This dvd is a "JUNK".
There are one more important thing should be "NOTICE".

I bought that once than I return the DVD back.
I am so surprise I have chance to see this kind of "copy right" quality in my life.
At least, I still keep original VHS version.
That is much worth than DVD version.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where's quality controls on the transfer of this classic to Dvd? 12 Feb 2006
By Dog Friend - Published on
What happened to the video transfer? Hard To watch! My Original VHS is better quality. It's like watching a concert on a roller coster. Boo! Where's the respect to this great preformance. The person responsible for this transfer/quality controls should be fired. Will Keep my VHS & Dump the Dvd!

1.0 out of 5 stars great performance, awful DVD quality 31 July 2004
By O. Anafarta - Published on
Having read the reviews of this DVD about how bad its quality is, I went to one of the biggest music stores in the city to see if they would let me watch it in store before deciding to buy it. They did let me watch it and, yes, the picture quality is AWFUL, its grainy and shaky. You can't watch this without getting motion sickness, and the sound was muffled. It's probably the bad conversion from PAL to NTSC that ruined this otherwise spectacular video. I actually own a PAL VHS of this concert and it looks/sounds okay. So, unless you are absolutely dying to see this performance no matter what, do not buy this DVD...
