Product Description

Product Description

Meet Your Ancestors, written by Diane Marelli, provides an introduction to the whole process of discovering your own family history. Topics covered include searching for birth, marriage and death certificates, census and church records, newspaper archives, and using the Internet.

From the Author

In 1998 I knew absolutely nothing about my husband’s or my own family history but I have learnt so much via resources that are easily accessible and ones in which you don’t have to be an expert to utilise. Although I had some early success I would become a detective solving mysteries that would lead to amazing results and regardless of how soul-destroying my journey was at times, once I had started I had to keep going. My diary, with relevant documentation, will take you through an avalanche of emotion incorporating rage, frustration, joy, humour and tears but also how an individual can achieve amazing results fairly quickly and easily. I also believe that others can not only benefit from my success but also avoid the pitfalls I encountered saving both time and money.

It's kind of easy to make a general start searching for your ancestors as it's become a very popular thing to do and everyone is talking about it. However, it's not so easy to find out how to search properly, where to go, who to ask and how to record and verify your findings. This book really gets you enthusiastic and keen to do it right! Straightforward and humorous advice along with resource ideas and basic 'do's' and 'don't' which have proved unbelievably helpful and interesting in my own family search. This books also treats you to the author's own pursuit of her family's history which unravels delightfully alongside and in amongst all the practical help and 'how to' stuff. Fab read, highly recommended to all you 'wannabe' genealogists

How enjoyable to read a book which is refreshingly alive, non technical and informative. As I read I soon became totally absorbed, shadowing Diane in her travels of research and discoveries. This is highly recommended for those who have not yet commenced their journey, or others who, like me, have got stuck and lost motivation.

This has spurred me into action and I am now off to meet 4 long lost cousins all of us having become orphans during the past few years. We are pooling our knowledge to plug some of the gaps in our family trees.

Diane’s passion shines throughout, no wonder, that a diary of events has turned into a first published book. I am sure this is going to be a great success and take her further in the future as well as the past.

I was hoping this book would help me in my search for ancestors, but found that it really concentrated on the author's own search. The tips given are probably not very relevant to most searchers today as many of them pre-date the availability of BMD Indexes and the 1901 census online, although these are mentioned towards the end.
An interesing story, but not really a 'How to Do It' manual
