Book Description

11 May 2007
We're going nowhere.Jem, an aspiring playwright living in Notting Hill, has just been dumped by his girlfriend. He dreams of fame and acclaim but, after years of struggle, is still no closer to achieving either. And, just when he thinks things can't get worse, the career of his best friend and fellow playwright begins to take off...Set in London and Edinburgh, "Meet Me Under the Westway" is an acutely observed look at the world of theatre and the arts. Straight talking, fresh and highly entertaining, Stephen Thompson's novel is a satirical yet brassy view of modern friendships and ambitions which perfectly captures the relationships of the young(ish) and irresponsible.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Nick Hornby... 6 July 2007
Format:Paperback
Meet Me Under the Westway is a well written an entertaining story about the ups and downs of a cheeky playwright. He's desperately trying to get a career and a love life that makes just a little sense. The book gives some great insights to creative writing, jealousy and how men think and behave in general. The dialog is funny and realistic - and so is the description of the places and people around Portobello Road in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab summer read! 5 Jun 2007
By JHM
Format:Paperback
This is a great read - funny, fresh and straight talking! It's about the loveable bastard Jem, a thirty-something playwright trying to get his break in the backstabbing world of theatre - and about his friends (and not least a couple of nearly-girlfriends) who are all trying to make their mark in the world. Lots of hilarious banter, funny cringing moments, the occasional tender moments and some interesting insights into male thoughts! Nick Hornby in Notting Hill - the perfect holiday read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Funny 15 Jun 2007
Format:Paperback
The key to the sheer enjoyability of this engaging novel is the central character of Jem. By the end of the novel, which seems to come too soon, so involved in Jem's world are you, the reader is completely on Jem's (selfish, conniving, at first seemingly unredeemable) side. At least I know I was. It is a laugh out loud book, and also surprisingly moving in parts. The book paints a picture of the Portobello Road area that is completely believable, not 'Kidulthood' but also, praise be, a million miles from the saccharine tweeness of 'Notting Hill'. The voice you hear in this novel is a breath of fresh air, completely original, funny and gripping. Get the novel now, before this sleeper hit gets turned into a film and they put some terrible actor on the cover. Meet Me Under The Westway is brilliant. I haven't enjoyed a book so much for years. Buy it!
