Meet The Supremes 29 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD
I ordered this cd when it was first listed and saw its release date put back time and time again. During that time I read the generally negative reviews of the album several times and during the last week prior to release I came so close to cancelling my order. However, one day it was too late and my cd was on its way, and am I glad that I did not cancel my order. This cds a real gem. Forget the stories that Diana Ross could not sing, each of the girls sound fantastic on this collection of songs which improve with each listen. Tracks like 'I Want A Guy' and 'Let me Go The Right Way' which on other collections sounded weak against the more famous Holland/Dozier/Holland compositions come into thier own in this setting.
The girls sound so keen to impress and the voices sound raw and refreshing, unspoiled by studio production. If you are a Diana Ross/ Supremes fan this is a must for your collection. It really is very good and improves with each listen. Its hard to believe that the voices on these songs come from fresh out of school teenagers. Brilliant.

That Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson were the voice of teenage longing in the mid sixties has never been in question, but the recently expanded reissue of their 1962 debut recording "Meet The Supremes" is revelatory in that it fully exposes the raw, hungry passion of the original trio and soon to be gone member, Barbara Martin.

While one could not consider the Supremes the first female garage vocal group, the fire and ice emitting from Diana Ross' vocals as evidenced in "Too Hot" are steamy indeed, and hint at the inferno that future fine tuning at the hands of writing and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland would unleash.

The steely determination of a young Diana Ross is fully captured in her live lead vocals of "Run, Run, Run","Let Me Go The Right Way", and "Your Heart Belongs To Me". Two standout live selections, from The Battle of the Stars, Live at the Graystone Ballroom from 1964 which pitted the Supremes against the Velvelettes "Anyone Who Had A Heart", and "Make Someone Happy" foreshadow the broad appeal the group that would become the group's trademark.

When these seminal recordings were re-released with a new cover in 1965, fans of the HDH made over group may have been startled at the raw edgy energy of these first recording sessions, and even Mary Wilson has reflected that "these songs sound better than I remembered."

Hip-o Select has gone all out with this high quality expanded edition, that they are so well known for, featuring the original mono and stereo sessions, alternative takes, leads featuring Florence and Mary, and live selections from the Motortown Special Review from 1962. As well as the long sought after track, "The Boy That Got Away" that was listed on the original barstool cover, but pulled at the last moment in favor of the rocking "Let Me Go The Right Way", is included here.

Meet The Supremes is essential listening for anyone wanting to witness the birth, polishing and harnessing of the sheer kinetic energy of the young Supremes and what was to become the soundtrack of an entire generation.

First of all I would like to pass my respects to the previous reviewers as I totally understand what they are saying. Although I also feel they have missed the point a little bit, what we have been privileged to with this release is the inner workings of The Motown Corporation. Here was a group that Berry Gordy had big plans for but could not figure at this point of time how to get his vision across. The same was going for Little Stevie Wonder and The Temptations, the sound was at this time not yet found. What we also have are different takes on songs which only go to show that even behind the control panel they where still experimenting and honing in on what could be the future direction for both this group and the label itself. It would have been interesting to hear Diana attempting "Buttered Popcorn" if this exists as Motown would like to swap leads around. The sessions section is so important to any Supremes fan as these are the tracks that caused much pain to the girls especially Mary. The Stereo mix is crisp and very refreshing after listening to the original mono mixes, and with this transfer to digital Hip-O-Select have once again done total justice to these special early recordings.
After this we are now treated to the girls singing some of these gems live at the Motortown Revue of 62 while writing this revue I'm listening to both the CD version of "Let Me Go The Right Way" live (here) and the original version released on the Motown live at the Apollo album (please note this was the only track released at the time)and I'm happy to say that the difference can be heard, as these tracks where recorded on a different night. Finally we are treated to the Supremes Battle of the Stars set at the Graystone Ballroom which girls did with The Velvelettes on the 29th Feb 1964. To any Motown fan this is gold as Motown have never released "Battle of the Stars" extended segments and it's full of energy and excitement as the girls perform to their local following in Detroit.
I can only say that with both this and the extended "Where Did Our Love Go" set there can never be a better in depth view into the early Supremes recording history this release is a essential addition to any Supremes or Motown collection.
