Synopsis

The smash hit comedy MEET THE PARENTS is paired here with its equally successful sequel, MEET THE FOCKERS.
MEET THE PARENTS stars Ben Stiller as the unfortunately named Greg Focker, a neurotic nurse intent on marrying his girlfriend, Pam (Teri Polo). But when the couple visits Pam's family home for her sister's wedding, he must first win the approval of her father, Jack (Robert De Niro), an overprotective ex-CIA agent. Before long, the awkward Greg and the suspicious Jack go head-to-head, resulting in hilarious scenes that feature a lie detector test, a suburban car chase, a toilet-trained cat, and a mean game of water volleyball. As the misunderstandings and mistakes reach an almost nightmarish peak, it seems as though Greg may never win over Pam's unflinching guardian. Featuring the inspired pairing of Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller (and an excellent appearance by Owen Wilson), director Jay Roach's clever comedy exemplifies every man's worst fears about courtship. When things for Stiller's character get bad, they just continue to get worse, culminating in a ridiculously funny airport scene. In the tradition of ANNIE HALL and FLIRTING WITH DISASTER, MEET THE PARENTS is an intelligent yet slapstick comedy about the eccentricities of the American family.
Director Jay Roach keeps the jokes razor sharp with the hilarious sequel MEET THE FOCKERS. This time around, young engaged couple Pam (Teri Polo) and Greg (Ben Stiller) are getting their parents together a few months before the wedding. Greg nervously plans out every detail of the trip, only to be usurped by Pam's domineering ex-CIA-man father (Robert DeNiro). Not only has he purchased an RV, insisting they'll be driving from New York City to the Fockers' home in Miami, but he's bringing along his perfect baby grandson. When they finally arrive at the Fockers' house, Greg's parents, Bernie and Roz (Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand), turn out to be sex-addicted hippies and not at all what the Byrnes (DeNiro and Blythe Danner) had expected. With one pitfall after another, the film takes the concept of awkward in-law experiences to new heights, from stories about past sexual experiences to detailed discussion of current ones. What's worse, the Fockers are teaching the baby curse words and weaning him on rum, to the shock of his overprotective grandparents. Every conversation is totally inappropriate and downright embarrassing, keeping audiences braced for the next disaster. Along the way, all six cast members turn in stellar performances, with Hoffman, Streisand, and Stiller leading the charge in true Focker spirit.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun package for all., 20 Jan 2008
By Nicholas Casley (Plymouth, Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
These comedies rely on the juxtaposition and bringing together within close family circles of wildly differing points of view about how life should be led. Robert de Nero's character is the control-freak, tense, quiet, family man. He's an ex-CIA agent and he's never really going to like whoever his daughter (Teri Polo) decides to marry. She wants to marry Ben Stiller. The problem is that Stiller's father (Dustin Hoffman) is a laid-back house-husband and his mother (Barbra Streisand) is a sex-therapist for the over-60s.

As other reviewers have written, this set up allows for some genuine masterly comic situations that will have you screaming out loud with laughter on first viewing. But this kind of comedy relies largely on the factor of surprise: once seen, it is rarely so comedic thereafter. In addition, there are long stretches in these films where the laughter barely flows.

So, if you like your humour based on family situations that just go on and on, and round and round, then you'll find "Meet the Parents" and its sequel "Meet the Fokkers" of supreme enjoyment. But play them a second time, and see if you're still laughing. I don't want to be a downer here: believe me, I haven't laughed so much as when Ben Stiller's champagne bottle's cork popped out and knocked down the Ming vase on top of Robert de Nero's family mantlepiece and ... Hell, I ain't going to give the game away, but tears were rolling down my eyes!

Both of these DVDs come with heaps of extras, from mini-documentaries on how they got the cat to act the way he did, to director commentaries for both films. And there are plenty of deleted scene and blooper extras to boot. A fun package for all.

5.0 out of 5 stars sequel is better than the original, 23 Jun 2007
By Jay "The Amazon Reviewer" (Mauritius) - See all my reviews

Brilliant value for money for two of the top selling comedies in box office history. Ben Stiller plays his usual bumbling self overshadowed by his domineering father in law, De Niro and his libertine mum, Barbara Streisand.
As mentioned in a previous review, the sequel is better than the original, watch it and be the judge yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two classics, 16 Mar 2006
By Top Cat "Tom" (Somewhere in England, apparently) - See all my reviews

Two genuine classics that will have you laughing for years to come. Meet the fockers is a much better movie than the first, but both have strong performances from Robert de Niro and Ben Stiller - two characters with completely contrasting personalities. 10/10
