Amazon.co.uk Review

Randy Newman's opening song, "A Fool in Love", perfectly sets up the scenario of Meet the Parents: "Show me a man who is gentle and kind and I'll show you a loser". Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) is the fool in love. Just as he's about to propose to his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo), he learns that her sister's fiancé asked their father, Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro), for permission to marry. Now he feels the need to do the same thing. When Greg meets Jack, he is so desperate to be liked that he makes up stories and feebly attempts to ingratiate himself with his prospective father-in-law rather than having the courage of his convictions. It doesn't take an elite member of the CIA to see right through Greg, but unfortunately that's precisely what Jack is. Directed by Jay Roach (the Austin Powers films), Meet the Parents is a well-crafted comedy that makes for a pleasant contrast to the sloppy excesses of the Farrelly brothers. Stiller is great at playing up the uncomfortable comedy of errors, balancing just the right amount of selfishness and self-deprecating humour, while De Niro's excels as the intimidating father. Blythe Danner as his wife, the Gracie to De Niro's George Burns, is the true heart of the film and Owen Wilson turns in yet another terrific comic performance as Pam's ex-fiancé. --Andy Spletzer, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Suited Roles, 30 Oct 2002
By Shaun (Hailsham, England) - See all my reviews
After the story of Meet the Parents starts to develop and you begin to meet the true personalities of the characters involved, you should be able to understand that the likes of Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller are perfectly suited to the roles that they play.

De Niro plays the prospective Jack Byrnes, former CIA amazingly well in true form and is able to come up with some classic, hysterical lines without cracking a glimpse of a smile. Then there is Ben Stiller playing the ever so vulnerable Greg (or so it seems) Focker, Ben puts up a great performance and you actually feel truely sorry for the guy after the stuff he is put through.

The film is from the director of the Austin Powers hence the reason why all jokes are all stringed together, one after the other- whilst still giving you the feeling that they are all perfectly placed.

I find it hard to criticise this film which is why I have given it 5 stars, not only are there some brilliant performances put up by De Niro and Stiller I have to give a mention to an other actor whos part made me crack up in places and this would be Owen Wilson, many would agree with me on this.

It is not just the actors/actresses involved that made me laugh and cringe in places, but some of the events that occured during the course of the film were simply hilarious and at places you knew something was going to go wrong before it did, especially in the scene involving the volleyball.... I won't say more, you will need to watch it to find out. You could say, a definate buy!

92/100

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very good film, 6 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This is a really well made film, De Niro is perfect as the suspicious father in law and Ben Stiller makes the ideal hapless boyfriend. The scenes are all really well thought out and the script is sharp. Watch the film while cringing at the familiar embarrassing feelings of meeting your inlaws. A perfect film for a good laugh at someone elses expense!

4.0 out of 5 stars A change from all the "gross out humour", 28 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I remember going to see this film at the cinema and thinking to myself, "yeah that wasn't too bad". Now that i've seen it for a second time I realise just how good it auctually was. For once it was a change from all the recent gross out humour like Americian Pie and Road trip.
The story follows Greg Focker a male nurse who, in order to propose to his girlfriend must first meet her parents and ask her father for his daughters hand in marriage.
Both Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro are excellent as the would-be son and father in law, and director Jay Roach (better know for the Austin Powers movies) moves the story along at a steady pace as Ben Stiller's character goes from bad to worse.
Overall a great comedy with genuinely funny scenes throughout
