Synopsis

Actor-turned-director Brian Robbins (VARSITY BLUES, THE PERFECT SCORE) is at the helm of comedian Eddie Murphy's alien adventure, MEET DAVE. Murphy stars as the minuscule captain of an alien spaceship that lands on Earth in the shape of a human being that looks just like him. The tiny crew is responsible for making the spaceship look and act like a human being as they search for a powerful orb that went off course and landed in Manhattan. Along the way, the captain--aka Dave--is befriended by Josh (Austyn Lind Myers), a fifth-grade boy who is being raised by his artist mother, Gina (Elizabeth Banks), since the death of his heroic Naval officer father. Although Dave and his crew land on Earth believing that the human race is inferior, they soon realize that there is something to be said for emotions, feelings, and friendship.

The fun in this film lies in watching the spaceship Murphy try to assimilate as a human. His exaggerated facial expressions are priceless, and his skill at physical comedy is apparent throughout the film. Dave is a sponge soaking up everything around him. The crew's attempts to understand human culture are also amusing, as they get most of their cultural information from Google and Yahoo. Gabrielle Union stars as No. 3, the cultural officer, while Ed Helms is No 2. the second in command who thinks that his captain is adapting to Earth way too easily. Kevin Hart is No. 17, the crew member charged with dealing with many of the spaceship's internal functions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice surprise., 6 Nov 2008
I was surprised that I actually liked this film, I only went to see it at the cinema as it was on,on one of those cheap kids club showings on a saturday morning , I didn't have high hopes for it as I am not really a fan of Eddie Murphy or even of comedy films for that matter but was pleasantly surprised, I got in to it from the very start and it kept my two young childrens attention too.The concept of the film is fun and it's suitable for all ages, I won't go into the whole plot, just give it a go you may just like it as much as we did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, 22 Jan 2009
Sometimes a film falls victims to some kind of slagging campaign from critics, no one goes to see it at the cinema, then it comes out on DVD and people buy it thinking, "This will probably keep the kids quiet" only to find that it must not be the same film the cirtics saw because it's brilliant. Well Meet Dave is that movie. Totally hilarious, totally loveable, totally bonkers. The only problem I had with this is that it regularly veers into stupidity but it always pulls it back with a great script and a growing sense of craziness that allows the film makers (for a change) to actually explore the concept as fully as they can, to its extremes rather than it just being a one joke movie. By the 2nd half I was laughing extremely hard and was amazed at how far they were willing to go. The effects are variable, some of the scenes with the small characters running around outside looked very fake but all the stuff with the spaceship was wild, off the wall and sometimes freaky, all helped by Murphy in top form again with great facial expressions and physical gags. There's also perfect supporting performances, notably the Starship Dave's paranoid "Number 2" officer and the 2 cops hot on the Dave's trail. By the end I was completely along for the ride and had accepted that Dave was a ship and not just Eddie Murphy playing a part. Just buy it.

A bit of a waste. I could not "get" this film. A funny idea, Eddie Murphy pulls some faces and talks in a comic voice. There is a co-star from the US TV office series. Read more

I really like Eddy Murphy, however this film is just terrible. The special effects aren't very good, and the story is really boring. Also, Eddy just isn't a very good actor. Read more
