Perfect for those who want to learn more about an episode rendered famous by Gericault's world-renowned painting.
The story of the shipwreck of the Medusa off the African coast, the cowardice and ineptitude of the commanders and the subsequent survival on board a raft drifting aimlessly for two weeks, the thirst and the hunger, the mutinies, cannibalism and the execution of the weakest in order to prolong the chances of survival of the others, all these tales are staggering and emotionally very involving. Of the 147 people abandoned,15 were left alive. The sheer scale of the loss, the stories of selfishness, cannibalism and murder reached far and stirred the hearts of people for years.
As a French kid,I had the opportunity of glancing at the painting of the raft of the Medusa in many schoolbooks. Why did I have to wait so many years to learn about the story behind it? Jonathan Milnes's narrative is excellent, riveting and impeccably researched,a drama peopled with unforgettable characters.
The account of the shipwreck covers a little more than a third of the book. The scandal that broke in an unsteady post Napoleonic political world and the painter's tormented life before and after the painting are unexpectedly the most fascinating and thrilling parts of the book in my view.
Highly recommended.
