4.0 out of 5 stars Medusa Stone casts a spell of suspense, 31 Oct 2003
By J. J Kamlani "jotuj" (Fairfield, Connecticut United States) - See all my reviews
Definitely his best books since Vulcan's Forge, Medusa Stone takes place in the African Nation of Irtrea( I hope I spelled that right), where Philip Mercer is on a Geological expedition to find a rare ore that can produce energy. Obviously not everyone wants him to find it, and that is where the conflict, and action in the story develops.
Medusa Stone moves at a good clip, and you are never bored, but...the only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the characters don't have any personality, particularly Mr. Mercer, who is a cardboard copy of Dirk Pitt, without the sense of humor.
I wish Mr. Du Brul would spend more time developing his character. The only thing you do know about him, is his soft spot for an old drunk named White, that his parents are both dead, and that he traveled a lot as a kid. He puts nothing in the story to make Mr. Mercer a likable character, and that is the main flaw in all his books. If he is going to continue this series, I'd HIGHLY recommend that he make his hero someone we can identify, and sympathize with, and not some cardboard, no-personality action figure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would make a great movie., 13 Mar 2003

(REAL NAME)
I enjoyed this book. Although the real action took a little while to get going it was still enticing enough right from the start to get those pages turning. Its easy to read, describes places and people well enough to feel you know and see them and the plot is plausible too (well, in an adventure book sort of way) with no glaring loopholes. All in all a fab read to pass the time. The ideal book for a train or plane ride. I'd definitely recommend it and intend to read others by the same author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than average - just, 13 April 2007
This is essentially 'Boys Own' fiction for an adult audience. The plot is barely believable, the characters one-dimensional at best, and the hero gets out of more impossible situations than is humanly possible. It's almost a case of 'with one bound Jack was free', and always the explosion conveniently seals off the cave behind him, not in front.
Having said that, the author certainly keeps the pace going, and it's an easy book to read - a good train journey book, in essence - and he certainly does his research. If he could just tone down the plot and action, and put more effort into exploring the characters he's created, he could probably write quite a decent novel.
