Product Description

“I was hooked by the end of page one and laughing out loud by the middle of page two. Finally, a new author as witty and sassy as Janet Evanovich.” — Lark Susak

Medium Dead is a fun urban fantasy chronicling the crime fighting adventures of Brenda – a reluctant medium – and Brian – a Vigilante Demon with an impish sense of humour. Think Stephanie Plum with magic and a dash of Carl Hiaasen.

Brenda Steele is smart, funny and out of her depth. A Vigilante Demon called Brian wants her to find murdered spirits and help him track down their killers. But Brian doesn't just catch criminals, he likes to play with them first, and make the punishment fit the crime. As he tells Brenda, “if all you did was turn up, capture the bad guy then leave – century after century – you'd die of boredom.”

He's also reckless – his last partner died during one of his takedowns.

Along the way, Brenda discovers that Brian isn't as old, or as powerful, as he led her to believe. He might even be human. Whereas the murderer they're hunting, and the child he's holding prisoner, might not.

This guy is hilarious! British humor, my favorite kind. The heroine's life is already in the toilet...and then she finds out that the dead talk to her. And THEN she finds out she's been chosen by a Vigilante Demon to be his bird dog, so he can go after murderers and make their punishment fit their crimes. He thinks he's funny, and he likes to wing it, and he's not too worried about putting her in danger, either. Good thing she's got some cojones, even if she's never actually used 'em before. Funny, funny, violent, sweet, funny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Medium Dead by Chris Dolley, 8 Dec 2011

I received these stories through early reviewers. I have to say that even those these a relatively short stories, they really pack a punch. I must say that I normally read this type of genre. I like mysteries and drama and those types of things. These stories may be short but you get the full impact from reading them. There are 3, of course and each is very different. There are very different subjects also, from the mob to poltergeists to mailmen and thieves. It was a very interesting book. I look forward to more from this author.

Brenda's life is boring. And that's the way she likes it.

Until she starts seeing ghosts, and discovers that she's a medium.

One day, her doorbell rings and a man asks to use her phone. When she tries to politely refuse, he's pushed in by a gunman.

And so, Brenda meets Brian, Vigilante Demon. Brian's self-assigned mission is to exact justice on people who have, for one reason or another, escaped the law.

Brian asks Brenda to be his sidekick, to which she eventually agrees.

The story begins as a light, humorous paranormal mystery, but eventually veers into the dark and gory, as Brenda and Brian search for a psychotic who tortures and kills young girls.

I saved MEDIUM DEAD to read on a transatlantic flight, thinking it would be the perfect light read, but that was not the case. Once the two crimestoppers began searching for the serial kidnapper/killer, the plot became

convoluted and hard to follow. Brenda and Brian's hunt was interrupted by other cases that they seemed to think were interrupting their real quest, as well as making the plot line even more confusing.

Dolley has a solid writing style, and the story had a lot of potential, but it could have used a little more editing. I do look forward to reading more by this author.
