Product Description

Product Description

This book is the first to describe and illustrate all the wild flowers of the Mediterranean islands and all coastal regions from sea-level up to 1000 metres – from Portugal and Spain eastwards to the Lebanon and back to Morocco.

The text describes over 2500 species and varieties, with notes on flowers, foliage, fruits, habitat, flowering months and distribution. It also covers the principle flowering or fruit trees, grasses and ferns.

The colour paintings were all done specially for this book and wherever possible are from fresh specimens. Over 1500 principle species are shown in colour, and the text is further illustrated with over
1200 line-drawings.

The Royal Horticultural Society has recognised the outstanding nature of this work by awarding Marjorie Blamey the Gold Medal, the highest award, for her paintings in this book.

From the Back Cover

'The wild flora' of the Mediterranean countries is not only historic and magically beautiful: it is also extremely rich – Greece alone has more species than all northern Europe.

'The introduction' outlines the book's structure, the region's climate, main habitats and flowering times, with an illustrated glossary. On pages 534 onwards are a bibliography and indexes to English and scientific names.

' The texts' describe over 2 500 species and varieties, with notes on flowers, foliage, fruits, habitat, flowering months and distribution. 'Bold' numbers indicate species illustrated in colour.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediterranean wild flowers, 25 Sep 2002

This review is from: Mediterranean Wild Flowers (Collins Field Guide) (Hardcover)
If you're wanting a companion volume to the same authors' Illustrated Flora of Britain and Northern Europe (Hodder & Stoughton, which now seems to be out of print, perhaps to be replaced by the new Collins publication) you may find it a bit of a disappointment.

Roughly the same number of pages, it's smaller format and the number of colour plates is significantly reduced. This means some of the plates appear overcrowded. Just occasionally this is an advantage, as when 6 subsp. of Ophrys sphegodes appear very close to the "parent" which aids comparison. But sometimes there are rather odd specimens crammed close together, sometimes 17 to a page. More irritatingly, the plates, with no text, are grouped in the middle of the book, with half the text coming before, half after. Not as good as having text on the left, plates on the right. It doesn't look nearly as good value as the generously illustrated Illustrated Flora, which, when it was still available quite recently was only £25 RRP.

Another point to look out for: "Mediterranean" doesn't include specimens found at over 1000m, so if, for instance, you're looking for a fairly complete flora of Cyprus you won't find it. It's reasonable to omit these plants, but you do need to be aware of it as it excludes quite large areas.

In the end I suppose there's a trade off: a more lavishly illustrated volume would probably be a lot more expensive. This has reliable information, good illustrations and is at an affordable price. And there doesn't seem to be a comparable work on the market.
