This short book is an excellent introduction to Middle English literature, which it places in its historical context of production, circulation, etc. Despite its brevity, it covers a wide range of subjets and draws the reader's attention to many topics of interest to be explored further. It contains an excellent bibliography, is well written and avoids being dry.
I'd recommend it for anyone with a general interest in the time period as well as anyone studying Chaucer or Middle English Romance at undergraduate level who wants to know more about the time period.
