Product Description

Review

Sprakes's book provides a succinct catalogue of all the medieval glass to 1547 in South Yorkshire, with an extensive introduction describing documentary sources, donors and heraldry, iconography, condition, colour, technique, style and design. (The Burlington Magazine )

Sprakes is to be congratulated on this painstaking catalogue which brings to light for the first time interesting material for the specialist. (The Burlington Magazine )

This volume is strong on the manuscript sources and provides comprehensive details of extant and lost heraldry both in the general introduction and in the individual introductions to each site. (The Journal of Stained Glass )

Product Description

This catalogue is the first comprehensive study of medieval stained glass in South Yorkshire. Not only does it describe and illustrate the surviving glass, but it also gives detailed information on the subjects portrayed, the inscriptions, donors and heraldry. Glass was imported into the area from other sources - including an important collection from New College, Oxford, Tudor Renaissance glass, and some German glass. The diverse artistic heritage recorded in this volume sheds much light on the history of South Yorkshire and the surrounding region.

After several nights of bed time reading i was hooked on this delightful read. The alluring illustrations were testiment of the effort applied to create one of my all time favourite stained glass books. I particuarly enjoyed the spellbinding chapter on lofty verticals, as exemplified by St. Mary's Church in Handsworth.
