Book Description

1 Oct 1998 Smelly Old History
Everyday life in British history is brought vividly to your nostrils, through scratch-and-sniff panels of typical smells of the period. Informative, amusing text, artwork, poems and puzzles combine with these pungent panels to give children a true "sense of the past"! This volume steps back into the mud and filth of a medieval village, visits the castle's deadly dungeons and the monastery's glorious gardens. Set off on a crusade and try to avoid the Black Death on the way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying 13 April 2013

This is not worth buying and I do not recommend it. It seemed a brilliant idea to smell history but my 9 year old daughter was very disappointed with this book as there are only a few scratch and sniff pages and they are very boring -
e.g. peppermint for the Monk's breath.

The details are poor, pictures poor and information poor.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book stinks -- literally! 18 Dec 1998

Medieval Muck is a lot of fun. In addition to the smells (they're not ALL bad), there are many bits of historical trivia. For example, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to of the death of Thomas Becket. Kids who like the Goosebumps books will probably love this series. I can't wait to smell my way through more history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smelly Old History 20 April 2002
By D.F. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
All of Mary Dobson's "Smelly Old History" books are an excellent way for elementary students to learn history and take whiffs of the many foul smells along history's timeline. The kids get so excited to smell the next foul smell they forget they are learning historical facts as they go. My first grade boy loves the books, but loves scratching the smells best. Some of the facts are a bit beyond 1st grade and younger, but they will still love the books. Ideal for 3rd-5th graders, who have some knowledge of ancient history and can remember names of people and important events in history. Excellent and fun choice for any elementary age student as a gift or for school.

I first read these from the library, stinky fun and informative as well. When I realized that they were becoming harder to come by, I decided to get my own copies.
