It would be hard for me to over-praise this slim volume. Much information is packed in an accessible way into less than 200 small pages, along with dozens of high quality photographs which are relevant to the text. My quibbles are few. Perhaps a little more on vernacular buildings would have been appropriate, and I would have liked some discussion on the development of key artefacts like chimneys; no doubt there were constraints on the author as to space available. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, who like myself, has little specialist knowledge, but enjoys visiting such buildings. It has already added value to a couple of visits.

Medieval houses explored 2 Nov. 2009

Are there any small books that carry as much information as the Shire books? This one is part of Shire Discovering and is absolutely packed with information about medieval houses in Britain, including photos and drawings to illustrate a point. Anthony Emery is a true expert, and a scholar, but also a fine teacher who knows how to say complicated things simply. This book makes me want to get all his other, bigger books, but this is the only one I can afford. Anybody interested in medieval architecture will benefit from this little jewel.
